During the recent Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase, SEGA and Ryo Ga Gotoku Studio announced that Yakuza Kiwami will be coming to Nintendo Switch on October 24th. It will retail for $19.99 USD on the Nintendo eShop. A trailer accompanied the port announcement introducing Kazuma Kiryu, burly brawling, and the bright streets of Kamurocho once again. Yakuza Kiwami is a remake of the first game in the Yakuza franchise, released in 2016. It follows the story of Kazuma Kiryu as he returns to the bright neon streets of Tokyo after serving a ten-year sentence in prison to protect Akira Nishikiyama—his adopted brother. In that return, war among the yakuza clans is brewing and long-time friends and allies of Kiryu have gone missing. At the heart of that chaos is a young girl known as Haruka who Kiryu vows to protect, as all of the major players within the Japanese underworld seek to capture her for their ends.

This release is likely intended to coincide with the release of the upcoming Like a Dragon: Yakuza series on Amazon Prime, as both release on the same day. This Switch port also marks the first time a mainline Yakuza game will be released on a Nintendo console outside of Japan. I’m curious to see if further entries will be released on the console or its rumoured next-generation iteration in the future.
