In this edition of RPGs Coming This Week, we kick off September with a trio of adventure titles! If you’re someone who enjoys intricate stories in games, you may scratch that itch with these games. Let’s dive in!

Date A Live: Ren Dystopia – September 5th (Windows)

There’s a light novel and anime series called Date A Live about a guy who seals away spirits by getting them to fall in love with him and ultimately kiss him. Surprise, surprise, it’s quite popular in Japan, to the point that Date A Live: Ren Dystopia isn’t even the first video game in the franchise. It’s actually the fourth!

Silly concept aside, developer Compile Heart absolutely means business with their visual novels, and so Date A Live: Ren Dystopia is certainly worthy of consideration by fans. Newbies should consider starting with Date A Live: Rio Reincarnation, a compilation of the three earlier games in the series, since Ren Dystopia assumes familiarity with the story.

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection – September 6th (PS4, XB1, Switch, Windows)

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection has been on my radar ever since it was announced. I enjoyed playing the original version of Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth, a graphic adventure mystery spin-off to the amazing Ace Attorney series that saw players stepping into the shoes of prosecutor Miles Edgeworth, Phoenix Wright’s rival and friend both inside and outside the courtroom, as he investigates crime scenes and solves their mysteries. I loved seeing more of Edgeworth and Detective Gumshoe and other returning characters from the series proper alongside colorful new characters, like the thief-turned-assistant Kay Faraday.

I was always rather disappointed that the sequel never received an official English localization. This collection readily fixes that omission, allowing players to play an official localized version of Ace Attorney Investigations 2 for the first time. Combining it with the enjoyable first game encourages both returning players and newcomers to have the chance to see the Ace Attorney universe from a new gameplay and story angle. I can’t wait to try my hand finally at it! Ace Attorney Investigations Collection is sure to delight fans such as myself and those new to this charming spin-off series when it releases later this week.

Boyhood’s End (Entering Early Access) – September 6th (Windows)

Boyhood’s End is so narratively ambitious that I feel downright obligated to root for it. It’s a sci-fi adventure game about a world ruled by a “mechanical overlord” that assigns a score to every human being. Weirdly enough, the young chump with the lowest human score in the world isn’t actually all that screwed; he gets afforded special treatment, though he’s often ridiculed by his classmates. Boyhood’s End follows the boy named Giovanni as he embarks on a cosmic train ride with one of the high scorers, an eccentric type named Campanella. The two literally ride a train that goes to the edge of the universe, apparently, and the concept is just so out there that I automatically adore it.

This game starts in Early Access, and is expected to release in five chapters over the next 12 months. Expect the introductory price ($10.99 USD) as more content rolls out, so probably best to get in on the ground floor if you’re interested.
