“Toot! TOOT! Next stop, the Hossberg Wetlands!”
The hype train for one of EA and BioWare’s biggest games in recent years continues to chug along, as Dragon Age: The Veilguard showcased a brand-new gameplay trailer during PlayStation’s September State of Play.
In the trailer, Dragon Age’s newest hero, the mage Rook, fights alongside two companions who specialize in hunting: Taash (dragons) and Lucanis (mages). The preview also highlights the mage’s combat abilities, accessed using the Ability Wheel. The three eventually prepare to fight a blighted dragon, though the encounter quickly spirals into something far, far worse.
Now, I’m not someone who typically pays a lot of attention to social media noise about whether something is truly Final Fantasy (or Dragon Age in this case), but I have to imagine that long-time DA fans had a roguish grin plastered on their face as the words “Wardens Forward Camp” flashed across the screen in the opening seconds. Suffice it to say that, in the world of Thedas, nothing ever goes to plan when a large group of Grey Wardens is involved. As the kids say: IYKYK.
Need to check things out for yourself? We’ve got the latest Dragon Age: The Veilguard trailer below, as well as some snippets from a recent PlayStation Blog post and several new screenshots featuring the various members of the Veilguard.
The Rook featured in this battle is a Mage – one of three classes you can choose when you create your character. Mages rain down fury with spells that incinerate, freeze, electrocute and crush.
The mage class can switch between two weapon sets – a Staff for ranged attacks, or an Elemental Orb and Dagger for close quarters combat. Eagle eyed players might be able to see Rook is facing off against an ice dragon in the trailer, which is vulnerable to fire. Because of this, the player has equipped an Orb that enhances Burning damage, alongside supplementary skills that complement the equipped weaponry.
Throughout the fight, Rook commands her companions to utilize abilities that set up powerful damage combinations. For example, when the dragon is staggered, Rook primes the target by commanding Lucanis to use the “Debilitate” ability. This applies the “Sundered” status, which is then detonated by Rook’s “Dark Squall” ability. This Primer + Detonator combo produces massive damage, getting the group closer to victory.
