‘That’s Rad’: RGG Studio Reveals Mysterious New Game Project Century

We’re now more than a week post-Game Awards 2024, and I know what you’re thinking: “In a world with a 24-hour news cycle, what could possibly be newsworthy enough to comment on after this much time has passed?”

I’m so glad you asked.

Easily the most “hype” news (as the kids would say) that RPGFan has yet to cover is the world premiere of the latest from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, titled Project Century. The trailer (below) showed pre-alpha footage — it’s still very early in development — and no release date or platforms are known at this time. That being said, I can assure you that our resident superfans felt the announcement itself was pretty rad.

Revelations about our favourite heroes’ fighting styles aside, RGG’s surprise announcement predictably set the internet aflame with educated guesses, rumours, and fan theories. These ranged from speculation that Project Century could be a brand new IP, to the protagonist’s resemblance to Kazuki Kitamura (who played Kazuma Kiryu in a 2007 Takashi Miike movie).

So what do we know? Unfortunately, not much for sure.

The 100-second trailer offers precious few details outside of the setting (Japan in 1915) and clips of combat that seem similar to that of Yakuza 0 and Like a Dragon: Ishin!. The period, known in Japan as the Taisho era, is one yet to be explored in the Like a Dragon series.

Project Century might not officially have the LaD name attached, but plenty else around the site does!

It’s become a bit of a running joke at RPGFan about just how frequently the Like a Dragon franchise comes up during podcasts, private messages, and general conversation “around the office”, but it’s for good reason. We have passionate people who like to share their interests and a development studio that can’t stop — or won’t stop — making games for their most popular franchise.

If you’ve somehow yet to encounter one of RGG Studio’s crime dramas, we encourage you to consult our Like a Dragon series primer.

If you’re simply looking for the latest and greatest, look no further than our review of Game of the Year candidate Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, in which resident superfan Jono Logan proclaims that it gives “not just an incredible Yakuza and JRPG experience, but provides a darn near infinite amount of content as well.”

Lastly, if you’re more of the, “okay, but you said they do spin offs” type, then you’ll definitely want to check out the well-acclaimed Ishin and the highly anticipated Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii.

As always when it comes to RPGs, whether it’s starring Japanese gangsters or not, be sure to keep reading RPGFan. You’ll want to stay tuned for more Project Century info.

Kyle is just embarking on his main quest at RPGFan and couldn't be more excited to join the team. He discovered the RPGFan community a couple of years ago and, after growing up in Western Canada as a "jock," was thrilled to realize that there were others in the world who learned roman numerals as a teenager thanks to the Final Fantasy series. Contributing to the news team is his main objective at the site and it is his goal to project the confidence of Ron Burgundy while keeping everyone from realizing he might just be Brick Tamland.
