Toby Fox Joins New Soundtrack for Cult Classic OFF

We’re still a few months away from the next INDIE Live Expo, yet fans of cult titles and developers have enjoyed juicy updates in the last several weeks.

Last December, it was revealed that a remaster of the cult classic RPG Maker game OFF is coming to Nintendo Switch and PC (via Steam) in 2025. According to Belgian developer Mortis Ghost and publisher Fangamer, the rerelease has since been added to over 50,000 wishlists on Steam, with the physical Switch version preordered “thousands of times”.

Now, we’ve learned that Toby Fox, creator and composer for Undertale and Deltarune, is joining to contribute to an entirely new soundtrack for this year’s rerelease. Fox, who has cited OFF as a design inspiration for Undertale, will handle most of the boss themes, as well as the normal battle theme.

As to why new music is needed, Fangamer noted that original composer Alias Conrad Coldwood was “hard to reach” and “nervous” about signing off on reusing his work. Coldwood did, however, clear the production of a new soundtrack.

On collaborating with Fox, Mortis Ghost said:

This wasn’t easy to keep my mouth shut about it, because I am really proud and happy that he is participating on the project! I love his work obviously, and it’s very exciting to have him in the team, and for such an important role! The music he composed is, I think, really excellent, and I can’t wait for you to discover it in-game. They obviously don’t aim to eclipse the original Alias Conrad Coldwood soundtrack, but you’ll see that they offer a fascinating alternative to it, completely respectful of the original atmosphere, while bringing something new and very impactful. I still have trouble not listening to certain themes on repeat!

Originally released in 2008 and translated from French to English in 2011, OFF drops the player into the shoes of the Batter, a humanoid character tasked with purifying the world. With its offbeat story, characters, and atmosphere, the game has since developed a cult following similar to EarthBound and Fox’s Undertale.

Seem like the kind of game you might want to check out? Find the announcement trailer below (complete with music by Fox).

He discovered the RPGFan community a couple of years ago and, after growing up in Western Canada as a "jock," was thrilled to realize that there were others in the world who learned roman numerals as a teenager thanks to the Final Fantasy series. Contributing to the news team is his main objective at the site and it is his goal to project the confidence of Ron Burgundy while keeping everyone from realizing he might just be Brick Tamland.
