In this edition of RPGs Coming This Week, we tackle the sequel to a much talked about CRPG, plus a small selection of indie game goodness. Trust me, folks, February’s going to get a lot busier very soon. You’d better strap in. Kick things off? Let’s.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II – February 4th (PS5, XSX, Windows)

Against all odds, I’m very interested in Kingdom Come: Deliverance II. I don’t typically care about realism in games, and the series’ calling card has been its sheer commitment to depicting an authentic version of 15th-century Bohemia. Connected to that dedication to realism is a controversy that I’m unfortunately aware of, and it’s a knock against the series for me.

Despite all that, I’m genuinely impressed that developer Warhorse Studios has, judging by previews, improved upon so many aspects of the original, from combat and survival mechanics to, yes, realism. I’m curious if this sequel finds a happy medium between playability and immersion, because I am mightily enticed by the prospect of experiencing a video game world with this much freedom in how you play.

Starlight Legacy – February 6th (Windows, macOS, Linux)

If you’re thinking, “Oh boy, another throwback RPG. How original.” First of all, how dare you, and second of all, Starlight Legacy lets you fly over the map on what looks like a dragon with fire coming out of its butt, so it’s automatically better than 90% of games like it.

And also, it just looks good. The colors are lush, the combat is turn-based goodness, and the little things are nailed, like the way the overworld looks when you’re on that dragon — it’s a dead ringer for Final Fantasy VI‘s Mode 7 world map while on the airship. And speaking of the world, Starlight Legacy lets you explore it in non-linear fashion, with enemies and bosses scaling to your progress in the story. I’m betting old-school fans will find a lot to love with this one, but if you’re on the fence, you might check out the demo available on Steam.

Sworn (Entering Early Access) – February 6th (Windows)

Our column covers a lot of games that start out in early access, and over the years I’ve seen games in various stages of progress. Sworn, a top-down roguelite action RPG a la Hades, is one of the few that has left me scratching my head, and that’s because it seems very much “done.” Like, in terms of polish and content, it’s already there.

But it seems Sworn won’t be spending too much time in EA. It’s slated for full release this summer, and developer Windwalk Games is on record saying that their plan is to put out four updates that introduce all sorts of changes, from new weapons and abilities to additional balancing. The game’s got a co-op option after all, and it’s undoubtedly important to make sure that the experience is smooth sailing. So I guess I talked myself into thinking this all makes sense, heh.
