While we all wait for the next Fire Emblem experience, several indie developers are taking up the reigns. One of which was the delightful Dark Deity, a strategy RPG we thoroughly enjoyed in our review from Audra Bowling. Now, with Steam Next Fest over, we know when we’ll be seeing Dark Deity 2: March 24th! The news comes after developer Sword and Axe and publisher indie.io released a lengthy demo.

Dark Deity 2 Release Date Trailer

If the 2D strategy RPG gameplay seen in the trailer intrigues you, a demo is available now on Steam. The demo follows the descendants of the previous game’s protagonist, Irving, as they prepare for war in the land of Verroa. You’ll have access to the game’s first four chapters to see if Dark Deity 2 is right for you.

Game Director Charles “Chip” Moore had this to say about Sword and Axe’s evolution from the first game and into the next installment:

Dark Deity 2 was the natural next step for us after learning the ropes with our first attempt at making a game in Dark Deity. We’ve always felt strongly about crafting an experience that every player gets to make their own- whether that be through the narrative choices they make or the nearly endless gameplay customization. Taking the same building blocks that we aimed for with Dark Deity – player agency, fantastical class, and character designs, and a classic fantasy story – we rebuilt Dark Deity 2 from the ground up to be the game we’ve always wanted to play.

What makes Dark Deity 2 so special compared to other strategy RPGs? Here is a description from the game’s Steam page:

At the heart of Dark Deity 2 is its turn-based tactical combat, where every decision shapes the battlefield and the fate of Verroa. Leading the charge are Gwyn and Riordian, who must navigate treacherous alliances and weave a web of relationships to turn the tide of war. Under their leadership, players command 20 legendary heroes across 45 branching classes, each with unique abilities, passive effects, and tactical roles. From cosmic sorcerers to crocodile-summoning game wardens, bloodied cultists to noble knights, and everything in between, players have endless opportunities to experiment with hybrid builds, skills, and gear—completely transforming how units perform in battle.

Beyond combat, Dark Deity 2 offers deep gameplay customization, allowing players to tailor their adventure through a dynamic campaign customization system inspired by popular community randomizers. Players can adjust recruitment orders, fine-tune difficulty settings, and tweak stats like XP, gold, and aptitude growth to craft a challenge perfectly suited to their playstyle. Every playthrough delivers a fresh tactical twist—not just in how battles unfold, but in how the story evolves based on which heroes are recruited, how they develop, and the choices made along the way. With personalized progression and near-limitless replayability, no two campaigns will ever play the same.

Building on the remarkable legacy of Dark Deity—which captivated over 6 million players since its 2021 debut—Dark Deity 2 pushes the boundaries of strategic gameplay and narrative depth. Featuring 30 chapters of fully voiced story content, the game immerses players in a rich, dynamic world where tactical decisions can alter the fate of an entire empire.
