In terms of popular game engines, RPG aficionados might immediately think of the various RPG Maker titles throughout the years.

With the upcoming Lunacid: Tears of the Moon, however, developer Kira is using an obscure toolkit that Dark Souls and Elden Ring studio FromSoftware released in 2000: Sword of Moonlight. This new first-person dungeon crawler is a straight-up homage to From’s earlier titles like King’s Field, and you won’t have long to wait to delve into it!

Lunacid: Tears of the Moon launches for PC on April 12th. That’s right, the game is already less than a month away! With so little time to wait, here’s what you need to know from the game’s Steam page:

Lunacid: Tears of the Moon is a First Person Dungeon Crawler made with the Sword of Moonlight – King’s Field making tool from 2000. Explore various dungeons for powerful weapons and spells to forestall the previsioned end of the world.

The Kingdom of Lyria rests in darkness, surrounded on all sides by the vast poison sea. In ages long past, brilliant silver moonlight fell upon Lyria, leading to its accession as a great kingdom of magic. But this time of solace may soon end.

Calamis Cerulean was granted a vision of this macabre future, the Great Old One who sleeps beneath the earth will soon awaken from it’s slumber and plunge the world into another dark age. He must venture into dangerous lands to gather magics of light and dark. Only then can he coax the silver moonlight to fall upon the Great Old One and lull it back into a deep sleep.

This isn’t Kira’s first rodeo with tributes to FromSoftware dungeon crawlers, as the original Lunacid back in 2023 was also inspired by the likes of King’s Field and Shadow Tower. You can check out what Ben Love thought in his review.
