Alcyone: The Last City – April 2nd (Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android)

Alcyone: The Last City is an interactive fiction game with light sprinklings of RPG on top. Players get to craft their own character and upgrade their stats over time, as they progress through a branching sci-fi story set in, you guessed it, the last city.

Thanks to an all-consuming force called The Nihility, life has been pretty much extinguished in the universe, so Alcyone (pronounced Al-Sigh-O-Knee) is the place to be… by default. Worse, the city is far from utopian, with society ruled by the rich and segmented into castes. It’s honestly exciting to try and explain because it’s so complicated! Like, I haven’t even touched on reincarnation being a thing in this world. For all those reasons and more, I have a strong feeling this choose-your-own-adventure tale is one I won’t be able to tear away from.

Dice ‘n Goblins – April 4th (Windows, macOS, Linux)

We need more cutesy dungeon crawlers! Not everything needs to approximate the gritty aesthetic of Wizardry, as Dice ‘n Goblins proves handily. Dutch studio Tsukumogami Software smartly and stylishly dresses the game up with approachable papercraft-themed aesthetics. Goblins have never looked so cute!

In terms of gameplay, combat will depend on dice rolls plus some strategy. Exploration takes cues from the likes of Etrian Odyssey with the grid-based maps, though there’s a “vertical twist.” I also want to touch on the music a little bit. My ears perked up when I watched the trailer on Steam and heard Dice ‘n Goblins‘ smooth-as-hell battle theme, and I was even more impressed by the music from this gameplay video. Whoever was in charge of the soundtrack definitely cooked.

Vagrus – The Riven Realms – March 31st (PS5, XSX, PS4, XB1, Switch)

Console players get their chance to embark on a daunting journey this week when Vagrus: The Riven Realms releases on PlayStation 5 and 4, Xbox Series X|S and One, and Switch. When players enter this treacherous world, they’re met with a stark warning: expect challenges that will test your resolve and patience, even on the easiest settings. You assume the role of a vagrus, commanding a caravan through a post-apocalyptic setting rife with danger and despair. Your choices matter — decisions about your caravan’s supplies, morale, and interactions with the various factions will ultimately shape your fate in this unforgiving realm.

As you navigate society’s remnants, a robust narrative with a good deal of reading is required to explore fully. While you’ll find combat tactics and resource management integral to survival, the story might be what ultimately pulls players in. With a focus on character relationships and meaningful dialogue, the game offers an experience akin to a tabletop RPG. Vagrus: The Riven Realms challenges players not just to survive, but to thrive despite overwhelming odds.

A Space for the Unbound – April 4th (iOS, Android)

A Space for the Unbound is an adventure title that, on the surface, initially appears one way, but has multifaceted depth and numerous twists and turns to keep gamers on their toes. It’s an incredibly powerful and emotional journey, one I greatly enjoyed when I played it previously. I’m excited that even more people will get a chance to play A Space for the Unbound when it releases on iOS and Android later this week!
