The Legend of Heroes: Trails beyond the Horizon Slated for 2025 Release

Started from the bottom, now we’re here. NIS America has unveiled The Legend of Heroes: Trails beyond the Horizon, coming this fall to PlayStation 5 and 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC (via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG).

The game was originally released last September as Kai no Kiseki: Farewell, O Zemuria in Japan, China, and Korea. Asia usually gets new Trails first, but with this announcement, western markets are guaranteed to reach release parity. In other words, we’re all caught up and future installments will likely come out day and date in both hemispheres. This is a watershed moment, especially for fans who have been around since the PlayStation Portable port of Trails in the Sky FC was localized back in 2011. Granted, the remake Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter is known to be launching worldwide simultaneously — also this fall, by the by.

But I digress; this post is all about the Trails beyond the Horizon reveal, after all. Check out the announcement trailer below, and read on for a brief synopsis and preview of the limited edition.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails beyond the Horizon Overview

Van Arkride and the members of Arkride Solutions are back, and this time the future of the entire Zemurian continent is at stake! The people of Zemuria await the launch of humanity’s first foray into space with bated breath. A sudden invitation from Marduk to cooperate in a high-tech training exercise sets Van, Ashen Chevalier Rean Schwarzer, and Father Kevin Graham on a collision course with the secrets at the very core of Zemuria.

Their paths may diverge, but the ultimate question remains the same: Just what lies beyond the edge of the horizon?

  • All Trails Lead Here: Paths from across Zemuria intertwine with higher stakes than ever before as the Trails series enters its final chapter!
  • Gameplay, Evolved: New gameplay mechanics such as Shard Commands, Awakening, and the time-freezing Z.O.C. give you an unprecedented amount of options in both Field and Command Battles!
  • Dream Teams: Gather allies from all over Calvard and beyond and put a stop to Ouroboros’ machinations in the Grim Garten, a dungeon that you can take on with your own custom party!

The highly anticipated upcoming release will also be available in a Limited Edition bundle, featuring a copy of the Deluxe Edition of The Legend of Heroes: Trails beyond the Horizon, art book, original mini soundtrack, SteelBook, and “Grim Timekeeper” acrylic clock, all contained within a collector’s box.

It’s up for pre-order on the NIS Online Store as we speak. That box set is looking pretty snazzy.

The Deluxe Edition (the de facto standard edition, if you’re familiar with NIS’ business practices) will have a mini art book and digital soundtrack voucher packed in with the game.

It’s hard to overstate how significant this news is for the Trails series. Before now, the most ardent fans have been keeping up to date with unofficial translation patches, since it would otherwise take years — over a decade in some cases — for entries to get localized. With the dawn of Trails beyond the Horizon, that era has officially ended. And when the series comes to a close, the world will be experiencing it together.

But Trails this, Trails that. What even is a Kiseki? If you don’t know your Crossbells from your Cold Steels, check out RPGFan’s extensive primer on the series.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails beyond the Horizon launches this fall, on PS5 & PS4, Switch, and PC via Steam, EGS & GOG. Keep reading RPGFan for the latest Trails news!
