Last week, three RPGs showed up out of nowhere. Everyone and their mother expected the Oblivion remaster, but pretty much no one anticipated the releases of Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones on Switch and Breath of Fire IV on PC. With how short this edition of RPGs Coming This Week is, I’m wondering if we might be in store for more surprises. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see. In any case, our relatively small lineup looks very promising, so let’s check it out!

Freeride – May 1st (Windows)

Get ready to embark on a whimsical journey in Freeride, an upcoming RPG from Flightyfelon Games that intertwines adventure with a personality test. Described by the developers as an “oddball RPG,” Players step into the shoes of Proto, who finds themself whisked away on a Fate Train guided by a self-proclaimed Princess. As you travel through the enchanting Spirit World, it becomes clear that not everything is as it seems; various spirits grapple with their own challenges, and players must navigate through these quirky encounters. With choices significantly impacting the storyline and the various personality outcomes, every dialogue you engage in adds another layer to Proto’s development.

Freeride certainly feels like a unique premise full of potential. Throughout the game, there are 32 different personality types to achieve, and five separate descriptors. Having so many options could provide a wealth of replayability, leading to an adventure that not only entertains but also invites players to reflect on their own personality. Freeride releases for PC on May 1st, with a Switch version forthcoming later this year.

Tales of Grimace – May 2nd (Switch, Windows)

Tales of Grimace  is a traditional indie RPG with an interesting title and a decidedly mature story. In a peaceful village, our main character Yi Ping’s world is shattered when an evil cult pays a visit, offering only death to those who don’t share their beliefs. Can Yi Ping and his friends overcome the hardships that await them as they fight against the cult’s machinations, and will he be able to face his past trauma?

Boasting 2D pixel-art graphics and eye-catching character artwork that reminded me somewhat of Studio Ghibli character designs at first glance, I’ve been curious about this game for a while. Promising a vast array of environments and a host of memorable characters, interspersed with what sounds like a powerful narrative, Tales of Grimace is an indie title to keep an eye on when it releases later this week!

The open-world action RPG 9th Dawn Remake, originally released last September on PC and on April 24th on consoles, is now coming this week to iOS and Android. I’ve heard this game is immersive, irreverent, and chock-full of content, so I imagine it’s a pretty amazing game to just have on your phone.
