Mortal Shell II to Launch in 2026

This year’s Summer Game Fest got the ball rolling with the premiere of action RPG Mortal Shell II, slated to release for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in 2026.

The first Mortal Shell came out in 2021 and went on to sell over two million copies, so it makes sense for developer Cold Symmetry and publisher Playstack to build on that success. According to them, the sequel will not require knowledge of the first game’s story.

Mortal Shell II is a dark power fantasy. This standalone sequel action-RPG offers an immersive, interconnected open world, expansive yet deliberately compact, designed to unfold its twisted landscapes and hidden structures while respecting the player’s time.

In this single-player title, your journey will be marked by brutal, high-intensity combat, both melee and ranged, against relentless enemies that demand your full attention and mastery.

You won’t need to have played the first Mortal Shell to dive into the sequel. However, returning players will find echoes of familiar faces, some changed, some forgotten, alongside entirely new Shells to discover and inhabit.

Like with the first game, in Mortal Shell II the dormant forms of forgotten warriors are scattered throughout the game’s ravaged world. Once discovered, each Shell can be awakened and possessed, unlocking their innate strengths and unique abilities. Evolve your own style of combat by harnessing these diverse powers, and unravel their secrets through the discovery of lost memories.

Mortal Shell II’s compact open world connects over winding footpaths guarded by the desperate and fanatical. Those who wander are rewarded with new story elements, Shells, powerful and strange weaponry, upgrades, curiosities, and more.

Playstack added that this new game builds on the original with a “compact and immersive” open world and an expanded weapon design system. Here’s what the leads at Cold Symmetry had to say.

“Mortal Shell II is the result of our obsession with dark fantasy, action RPGs, and high-stakes combat,” said Cold Symmetry co-founders Andrew McLennan-Murray, Anton Gonzalez, and Vitaly Bulgarov in a joint statement.

“It is a vision shaped by everything we love about these genres, distilled into a single, relentless experience,” the trio added.
