If you like your games with a heavy serving of plot, narrative, story, whatever you want to call it, this might be the week for you. This edition of RPGs Coming This Week features a few adventure games that I fear may go under the radar, considering the big bug in the room, so here’s us giving some shine. Let’s dive in!

Neyyah – September 2nd (Windows)

If you’re a certain type of old head, it might take you about three seconds to understand what Neyyah is going for from the trailer above. This first-person point-and-click game (a rarity these days) looks like an unabashed throwback to the likes of Amerzone and especially Myst. I’m tickled by the pre-rendered backgrounds and the hammy real-life cutscenes that look like they could’ve been filmed 20 years ago. I absolutely adore how liminal and timeworn the environments feel, perfectly capturing the vibes of its seeming inspirations.

On Steam, there’s just enough about Neyyah‘s story to intrigue me. The player character is someone who must explore the titular location, part of a group of remote islands, to find their way back home. Neyyah is littered with the remains of old cultures that seem to have been highly advanced, and part of the game is about uncovering their history and potential implications for… Earth. Wild stuff, and I’m so into it.

Casebook 1899: The Leipzig Murders – September 4th (Windows)

Casebook 1899 – The Leipzig Murders is a classic point-and-click detective adventure set in the German city of Leipzig at the turn of the 20th century. Step into the role of Detective Joseph Kreiser as you attempt to uncover the mystery behind a string of murders in this booming industrial city. The game lets you explore hand-pixelated scenes, meticulously crafted from extensive historical research to ensure maximum accuracy. Fully voiced in German for authenticity and immersion, the game draws you deep into its atmospheric world.

Examine clues, interrogate witnesses, and navigate a city crippled by crime. Will you succeed in solving the case and putting the right culprit behind bars, or will you fail your investigation? Your choices determine the outcome, so you’d better have a sharp eye and a keen mind! And if you want a taste before release day on September 4th, you can already play the demo on Steam right now to see what awaits you!

Shuten Order – September 5th (Switch, Windows)

Shuten Order releases this week for PC and Nintendo Switch. This latest creation from the mind of Kazutaka Kodaka (The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy, Danganronpa) is a unique adventure game that combines five different gameplay styles into a single narrative. Players assume the role of Order founder Rei, who was recently murdered and then resurrected. What does one do when returning from the dead? Solve their own murder, of course!

What sets Shuten Order apart is its inclusion of five distinct gameplay sections, each linked to a murder suspect. These include sections for stealth horror, mystery, visual novel, romance, and escape rooms. There are five separate ministries in the Order, and each one aligns to a particular genre. Players must complete stealth encounters in the Ministry of Security, for instance, or survive deadly escape challenges in the Ministry of Health. Each route not only presents unique mechanics and storytelling, but the five weave together to propel Rei toward the truth. Shuten Order is sure to have something for a wide range of adventure fans when it drops on September 5th.

Dark Deity 2 – September 4th (Switch)

Dark Deity 2 is a fun and surprisingly heartfelt strategy RPG similar to Nintendo’s Fire Emblem series.  I enjoyed my time with the PC release and I’m excited for more people to have the chance to try it out when it releases on Switch later this week!

Freelance graphic designer by day and gaming aficionado by night, Adem joined the RPGFan team to fully express his passion for video games. He grew up playing on his uncle's PC and PS2, which introduced him to many titles he was probably too young for (Resident Evil 4 and Vagrant Story at 8?!). Thankfully, his uncle also passed on the dedication needed to reload a Dragon Quest VIII save just to earn enough casino tokens for the Gringham Whip, and for that, he's forever grateful.
