RPGs Coming This Week, 9/7/25

This edition of the column should really be RPG Coming This Week, as it’s one of those rare times where we only have one item on our agenda. Whether this one game is even an RPG is… debatable, but we as a site land on it being more role-playing than not. I personally dislike arguing about these things, but if you want to do so, hit us up (respectfully!) in the comments or on social media. Anyway, without further ado, let’s get into it!

Borderlands 4 – September 12th (PS5, XSX, Windows)

I’ll be the first to admit I’m not exactly familiar with Borderlands, the series of open-world first-person action RPGs by Gearbox Software. I’m aware of it — who isn’t? — and I understand it’s regarded as the premiere looter shooter franchise.

Since the first game in 2009, Borderlands has grown into a multimillion-dollar property with multiple spinoffs (Tales from the Borderlands, New Tales from the Borderlands, and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands) and a film (that flopped but supposedly drove some sales for the games). It’s been nearly 15 years, and looter shooters feel at a low ebb these days, but Gearbox is expressly intent on doing right by old fans and winning over new ones with Borderlands 4, coming this week to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

This latest game takes place on a new planet, and players will have new ways to traverse it with double jumps, grapple hooks, gliding, and even swimming. Of course, new setting means new story, this time centering around a dictatorial antagonist named the Timekeeper. The campaign is playable in four-person co-op and allows for non-linear progression, so it feels ideal to gather a few buddies and see where your story takes you. So far, Borderlands 4 is looking like the game people remember and want, now bigger than ever. Gearbox seems to understand the assignment, so let’s see the result.

There are a couple indie Steam titles coming out this week that I have my eye on, too -- Heroes of the Seven Islands is a ~10 hour RPG with an MS-Paint-ish art style, inspired by some of the Might and Magic series I'm less clear how much of an RPG the other game I'm watching, The Little Tomb: The Maholova Club and the Search for a Dead Body, is -- Cavyhouse's last title was a Mystery Dungeon-ish roguelike game, but this looks more like a platformer collectathon? But the description still mentions unlocking new skills to progress, so I'm expecting some kind of genre mash-up here. (Sidebar: I have been following Cavyhouse since back in the days when Carpe Fulgur was translating and publishing indie Japanese games like Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale)
