The floodgates have opened. This summer was pretty low-key in terms of new releases, but autumn rectifies that with an absolutely packed slate. It’s gonna be like that for the next six months or so, really, knowing what we know now after that behemoth of a Nintendo Direct. So, as always, here’s your guide to the RPGs Coming This Week!

Grey Heritage: Noble Duty – September 15th (Windows)

Screenshot of Grey Heritage: Noble Duty, one of the RPGs coming this week

Grey Heritage: Noble Duty is an indie strategy RPG in a similar vein to genre greats such as Fire Emblem. It’s actually a prequel to the developer’s earlier SRPG, Grey Heritage: Faded Vision, with Noble Duty centering around protagonist Jaden as he embarks on a nation-spanning quest to find allies and fulfill his noble duty as a Lord of Astrea after being branded a traitor.

Boasting no permadeath, a ten- to fifteen-hour-long playthrough, the ability to rewind up to ten turns in battle, and a focus on forging friendships amongst army members, as well as what appears to be polished SRPG combat, Noble Duty could be a welcoming game for newcomers and returning players to the addicting tactical RPG subgenre. I love the anime visual design and sprite-work, so hopefully the game proves a blast to play when it releases later this week!

Type-Noise: Shonen Shojo – September 17th (Windows)

Artwork of Type-Noise: Shonen Shojo, one of the RPGs coming this week

Danganronpa and Zero Escape sickos, take notice because this game’s trying to be your next obsession. Type-Noise: Shonen Shojo ticks all the boxes, at least on paper. Colorful cast of damaged teens? Check. Countless layers of mystery and intrigue across different storylines? Check. Varied and challenging (YMMV) puzzles? There are over 40 in the game, so check. Cute but probably ill-intentioned mascot character? Upupupu. Check.

I gotta say, it’s hard for me to find something in here I don’t like. Though if it all sounds a little too good to be true, I’d check out the demo on Steam.

Class of Heroes 3 Remaster – September 18th (PS5, Switch, Windows)

Class of Heroes 3 Remaster Screenshot

Class of Heroes 3 Remaster is a first-person dungeon crawler from developers Acquire and Zerodiv, published by PQube. Originally released in Japan in 2010 for the Sony PSP and PlayStation 3, this title has, until this remaster, never been available to the western retail market. Last year, Class of Heroes 1 & 2: Complete Edition gave players the opportunity to experience the original two games on modern consoles, with visual enhancements, new characters and features.

Described as “school-based school-based 3D dungeon-crawling RPG(s)” The Class of Heroes games take place in an academy of sorts, where magic, monsters, and martial arts are just part of the school experience alongside the usual friendships, studying, and romance. Class of Heroes takes heavy influence from the foundational, genre-defining Wizardry series, but applies a decidedly anime aesthetic replete with tropes and caricatures one would expect from a shĹŤnen manga.

HYKE: Northern Light(s) – September 18th (PS5, Switch, Windows)

HYKE Northern Lights Screenshot

Another week, another gorgeous, fully featured RPG that deserves far more attention than it’s getting. At least, no one’s talking about it in my bubble. If you’re excited for HYKE: Northern Light(s), let me know because I’m all by my lonesome right now.

This is about a young witch — the eponymous Hyke — in search of her mother who “ruined the world”. Our hero might be the protagonist, but there are six others to play as. See, Hyke comes across other witches guarding so-called Forbidden Areas across the world, and they eventually join her as she continues to look for her mom.

The other main thing to know about Hyke is that she loves camping, and a significant part of the game will be spent chilling out with your companions and customizing your campsite. If you think I should’ve led on that, you’re right.

Illusion of Itehari – September 18th (Switch)

Illusion of Itehari Screenshot

Illusion of Itehari is an otome visual novel set in the floating utopia known as Itehari. Following an unknown assailant’s attack, protagonist Hinagiku discovers that the city she’s long idealized might not be as perfect as its residents believe. Together with a colorfully varied cast of characters, can she uncover the secrets lurking at the very heart of Itehari, or will they all succumb to its hidden dangers?

I’ve been curious about Illusion of Itehari for a while as it features eye-catching artwork, a branching narrative that builds upon each choice made, and top-tier voice acting. Originally released in Japan as Utakata no Uchronia, players will get to play the English-translated Illusion of Itehari when it releases later this week on the Nintendo Switch!

Marisa of Liartop Mountain – September 19th (Switch, Windows)

Marisa of Liartop Mountain Screenshot 003

Unlike HYKE: Northern Light(s), the titular character of Marisa of Liartop Mountain isn’t the protagonist. She’s actually the person who’s missing, and it’s up to Reimu, accompanied by four other Touhou heroines, to track her down. That’s right, this is another game based on the sprawling and extremely diverse Touhou Project series. We’ve covered a few that have come into our ambit, like Touhou Spell Carnival and Touhou Genso Wanderer: Foresight, but this new title is smack dab in our wheelhouse like never before.

Marisa of Liartop Mountain is simply an RPG in the most primordial sense of the word. Inspired by tabletop gamebooks, it’s a choose-your-own-adventure affair where your dice luck will strongly influence the direction of your playthrough. You also need to consider what your companions think, though it’s possible their guidance could lead you astray. With all that variance, Marisa of Liartop Mountain could be a highly replayable experience.

If you’re curious or care to dabble in it, a demo is available now on Steam.

Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree – September 19th (PS5, XSX, Switch, Windows)

Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree Screenshot

Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree is a roguelite set in a mystical world, offering a unique twist on the genre. Unlike most roguelites, it features two playable characters in each run; in addition to Towa, players can choose from eight others, adding a variety of abilities and strategic depth to the combat.

Beyond its stunning art style, the game also boasts a soundtrack by the renowned Hitoshi Sakamoto. I took the time to sit down and really listen to some tracks, and it was well worth it.

With the release of Hades II just around the corner, I hope roguelite/roguelike enjoyers try out Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree before they dive back into the underworld.

Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter – September 19th (PS5, Switch 2, Switch, Windows)

Screenshot of Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter

Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter is the 3D remake of the first The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky, the start of Falcom’s massive RPG opus. Estelle and Joshua’s initial journey through the kingdom of Liberl sets the stage for a tale rife with multifaceted characters and impressive worldbuilding, one that holds a special place in my heart ever since I the end credits for The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky rolled on my PSP, making me a fan of the Trails subseries.

Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter retells that original story in full 3D graphics and, though I miss the original game’s sprite work, I do adore how the characters and settings look in the remake. Complete with voice acting, the game now has a truly cinematic quality to match the series’ later 3D games! The battle system is also upgraded to make it more action-based, fitting for the combat evolution of the newer Trails titles.

Newcomers looking for a way to start the often intimidating interconnected multi-entry series could find just what they’re looking for here, while those already familiar with the first Trails in the Sky can relive that incredible adventure in an eye-catching new light. That alone’s a good enough reason for me to be excited when the remake releases as more exposure to all things Trails is a wonderful thing!

Wander Stars – September 19th (PS5, XSX, Switch, Windows)

Wander Stars Screenshot

Wander Stars is an indie RPG showcasing the power of words in a way that’s thoroughly creative and engaging as you string together turn-based battle combos, using descriptive and modifying words to wreak havoc on your opponents in clever martial arts matches that bring to mind nostalgic anime and manga action sequences. In Wander Stars, Ringo joins forces with the somewhat shady Wolfe on an interstellar journey rife with colorful characters and adventure. Will the duo be successful in locating the mythic Wanderstar map?

I enjoyed the earlier time I spent playing the demo, greatly loving the clever combat angle and inspired anime imagery found throughout the title. We’ll find out if words truly can hurt when Wander Stars releases in full later this week!

Also Coming This Week

Puzzle Quest: Immortal Edition – September 18th (PS5, XSX, PS4, XB1, Switch, Windows)

Puzzle Quest: Immortal Edition is an enhanced version of the match-3 RPG Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords. Since coming out in 2007 on the Nintendo DS and PSP, the original game has seen various ports to practically every system out there. Name a console from the last 15 or so years and you can probably play Puzzle Quest on that thing.

This new Immortal Edition makes it available on the latest consoles (except the Switch 2, though I’d bet on a port coming in the near future). It adds new visual polish and incorporates all the additional content and expansions released over the years. It also introduces a new character class and various gameplay improvements.

With how often it’s been released, I can’t say this is the ultimate version of Puzzle Quest, but it’s looking like the most definitive one for the foreseeable future.
