Five years after celebrating a successful Kickstarter, Kingdom of Night is finally here! Well, we at least have a demo to play, since the full release of Kingdom of Night on PC is still planned for Q4.

The demo is live on Steam, offering players a full vertical slice that delivers an authentic taste of its action-RPG blend of coming-of-age drama, cosmic horror, and 1980s nostalgia, all packed into about 1.5 hours of gameplay!

Kingdom of Night tells the story of a small town called Miami, Arizona (yes, Arizona, not Florida, so it really is a small town), where a satanic cult unwittingly plunges the town into chaos by summoning the ancient devil Baphomet. You play as John, who wakes up to discover his neighbor has been kidnapped. Determined to fight back against the demonic invasion, he sets out into the night to rescue his friends before it’s too late.

Check out the demo trailer to see how the game unfolds in a beautiful pixel-art style:

Key Features

  • Save Miami : Take down the town’s demons as you get closer to unraveling Baphomet’s grip on Miami. Explore the entire map of the town, interact with a wide cast of NPCs and take on the Demon Generals in the order that you wish.
  • Choose Your Class: Choose from 5 different classes: Barbarian, Knight, Rogue, Necromancer and Sorcerer. Each class excels differently, providing a unique play style depending on your choice. The class you choose decides your base style, while the skill trees allow for further customization.
  • Shape Your Character: Skill trees are split into three branches, containing 10 different talents each. As you level up, spend allotted points into any of the three branches of your class. Once you have reached level 10 in your first branch, you are free to cross over into another branch, allowing you to fully customize your play style.
  • Hoard the Best Gear: Outfit yourself with new equipment via quest rewards, hidden items throughout the town, and scoring random drops from a multi-tiered loot system with variable drop rates. Items range from common to completely unique. The items you collect provide an extra dimension to character stat development and have special abilities that will make you even more powerful.
  • Co-op With Your Friends: You don’t have to face the forces of darkness by yourself. In Kingdom of Night, either play through the campaign as John alone, or with a friend in local co-op. Team up and synergize different character classes, becoming a torrent of annihilation that the underworld will fear.

After playing the full demo, I can honestly say it’s worth checking out and forming your own opinion on. Personally, I can’t wait for the full game to release. The story pulled me in right away, and since the demo only shows the beginning, I’m curious to see where it goes next. The characters are entertaining too, built around funny 80s-style stereotypes that immediately reminded me of classic Spielberg movies and, for a more modern touch, Stranger Things. The combat, at least in warrior mode, felt a bit stiff at times, though this may improve as development continues.

Overall, the demo left me genuinely excited to see more of Kingdom of Night, so keep an eye out for updates with RPGFan as the launch gets closer!
