It is a personal pet peeve of mine when games are purely marketed as “it’s like [game you like] and [game you know of], with a touch of [game your friend keeps telling you to play],” since it does a disservice to the upcoming title. So, thankfully, while The Last Worlds: Crossed Souls developers, Lupio Studios, share a love of RPG and adventure titles such as The Legend of Zelda, Monster Hunter, and Dragon Quest, they are paving their own path in this open-world action RPG and not leaning on those influences to showcase the game.
With a Kickstarter campaign funded in less than two days โ and with four days remaining โ you can see some visual inspiration, especially from the likes of Dragon Quest. But with the ability to play as either the humanoid Matwin or creature companion Lupio and many weapons, magic, and skills at your disposal, it seems there will be plenty of gameplay variety on offer, which you can sample for yourself with a demo available now on Steam. But before we get into more details, it is time for a trailer!
The Last Worlds: Crossed Souls Demo Trailer
The Last Worlds: Crossed Souls is set on the planet NESS-444, inhabited by creatures called Nessky, beings “torn between light and darkness,” as some will be friendly and others hostile. It sounds like there are even some species that are especially deadly as well; due to untold events in the planet’s history, some species of Nessky have transformed intoย “creatures of devastating power,” with some even described as “living calamities.” If these creatures are roaming the open world, maybe there’s a touch of Xenoblade inspiration too, since who doesn’t love accidentally drawing the attention of that level 85 beast?ย The Last Worlds: Crossed Souls will also feature a crafting component, and given some of its influences, it could be that the crafting system and resource collecting may be vital to survival in the wilderness.
In fact, speaking of Monster Hunter, one of the game’s higher stretch goals features a special guest composer from Scarlet Moon’s represented artists. While The Last World‘s soundtrack will be primarily composed by Emanuele Marchese, this stretch goal would fund a guest song by Yuko Komiyama, known for her work on the Monster Hunter series, Mega Man X7 & X8, and Final Fantasy Record Keeper. While it’s quite a lofty stretch goal, one never knows! It’s clear the three brothers who make up Lupio Studios have quite a lot of passion about their game, and gaming in general:
“Our love for videogames began in our very young age,” notes Lupio Studios brothers Pasquale, Vittorio, and Matteo. “Since childhood, we’ve been shaped by the worlds of Zelda, Pokรฉmon, and Monster Hunter. Our biggest inspiration, however comes from the Dragon Quest saga. Its blend of drama, irony, and important values in a fantasy adventure captured our hearts early on. Now, we’ve spent four years chasing our dream: making a game together. Despite our limited resources, our passion and hard work pushed us, and what we’re sharing now is just the beginning. We are hopeful for the support of RPG fans who want to join us on this incredible journey!”
While I’ve covered the essentials here, you can learn more about The Last Worlds: Crossed Souls on the game’s campaign page and official website. Before we depart, though, it is time for screenshots!
