Square Enix has released a new trailer for Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, their upcoming remake of the 2000-released island-hopping JRPG.
The trailer was shown at the recent State of Play Japan, giving players a look at its diorama-like aesthetic as well as new content centred around an adult version of party member Kiefer. Check it out below!
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined – Follow-Up Trailer
As seen above, players will uncover a mystery surrounding an imprisoned Kiefer during the course of the story, who is freed by the Hero, his old childhood friend. It seems that Kiefer in the present timeline is a powerful combatant, bringing fire and flair to turn-based combat.
Beyond that, the trailer showcased the game’s aesthetic, centred specifically on handcrafted dioramas. Infused with the late Akira Toriyama’s spectacular character designs, it showcased a wide array of landscapes ranging from rocky caverns and green forests to underground dungeons.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined focuses on the Hero, the son of a fisherman, who is transported to the far past with his childhood friends by way of a mysterious shrine. In the past, they discover that the world has been sealed away by a vicious power and embark on a seafaring adventure to free the world and its inhabitants. As someone who hasn’t had the chance to play Dragon Quest VII, I’m deeply curious to see how this reimagining recontextualises its story, gameplay, and quality of life for an era twenty-five years removed from its original release. If the above trailer is anything to go by, it won’t lack for bombast and that signature Dragon Quest charm!
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined will release on February 5th, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Microsoft Store and Steam.
