Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic Teaser Trailer
Lucasfilm Games has confirmed that Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a “spiritual successor” to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, the first entry in a revered duology of single-player Star Wars role-playing games. Casey Hudson, co-founder of Arcanaut, will direct this new entry, having previously directed Knights of the Old Republic alongside titles such as BioWare’s Mass Effect trilogy, Jade Empire, and Neverwinter Nights.
In an interview on the official Star Wars website, Hudson and Douglas Reilly, vice president and general manager of Lucasfilm Games, provide further details on Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic. They confirm that it is neither a sequel nor a continuation, but set during an open canvas of history like the previous games. Reilly states:
Star Wars‘ past is a vast open canvas for creators to explore without having to navigate storytelling touchstones from other media. Being set in the past gives us an immense amount of open space to tell new original Star Wars stories, while staying true to the spirit of the galaxy we all love. There are, quite literally, infinite stories to tell. While we will always honor and celebrate the core saga, it’s crucial to explore new territory, meet new characters, and see new parts of the galaxy.
Beyond that, not much else is known, except for speculation. Seemingly, players will take on the role of a Force-user, with space and field exploration, galactic party members, and the threat of combat at the forefront.

As someone who adores Star Wars‘ old canon and most of the new one, I’m beyond curious to see what modern technology and production values bring to an open tapestry in that universe. At the very least, if released, it will broaden the scope of a galaxy far, far away in interesting ways.
Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is currently in early development and has been confirmed to release on PC and unspecified console platforms.
