Sci-Fi RPG Exodus to Launch in 2027

Exodus has made a return at The Game Awards, two years after its initial reveal during the event in 2023. Developer Archetype Entertainment unveiled a new gameplay trailer and announced an early 2027 release window for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

You might think the sci-fi RPG looks a lot like Mass Effect, which makes perfect sense since Archetype includes former developers from BioWare, as well as Blizzard, Naughty Dog, and others.

Watch the new gameplay trailer below.

The trailer offers a promising look at the gameplay while also setting up the gameโ€™s narrative foundations. Exodus places a strong emphasis on player choice, with decisions that carry major consequences and shape both the story and the fate of entire civilizations. The game explores a universe where humanity struggles to survive against powerful alien forces known as the Celestials, ancient beings whose influence has altered the course of history.

On the gameplay side, Exodus plays as a third-person, cover-based shooter where you move between cover and engage enemies strategically. The game features a wide range of superhuman abilities, which tie directly into its sci-fi setting. Your primary weapon is a shapeshifting gun called the Recycler, powered by celestial technology reclaimed from humanityโ€™s enemies. A powerful gauntlet further expands your abilities and lets you manipulate the environment in both offensive and creative ways. In the trailer, the main character, Jun, punches the ground, causing the earth to erupt beneath nearby enemies. In another moment, Jun creates a platform to reach a higher area. These mechanics suggest a strong focus on environmental puzzles, large-scale combat encounters, and boss fights. One standout moment even shows Jun fighting a massive sentient robot bear bare-handed inside an arena.

Here is a sample of the story if you want to learn more:

  •     Return to a changed world, where time dilation has amplified your choices and reshaped the future of humanity.

  •     Lead a formidable crew across the stars โ€”human and Awakenedโ€”driven by their own convictions and deadly in the fight ahead.โ€‹

All of this feels incredibly exciting. Exodus presents itself as a massive new space opera, developed in collaboration with Wizards of the Coast, where players explore the evolution of human and alien civilizations and make decisions that shape the fate of humanity and beyond. As a bonus, Matthew McConaughey voices one of the main characters, Junโ€™s mentor, the mysterious C.C. Orlev.

While fantasy RPGs dominate the genre right now, Exodus could mark the return of the large-scale sci-fi RPGs many players love and miss. Exodus launches in early 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.

He grew up playing on his uncle's PC and PS2, which introduced him to many titles he was probably too young for (Resident Evil 4 and Vagrant Story at 8?!). Thankfully, his uncle also passed on the dedication needed to reload a Dragon Quest VIII save just to earn enough casino tokens for the Gringham Whip, and for that, he's forever grateful.
