Square Enix Reveals Dragon Quest 40th Anniversary Logo

Dragon Quest 40th Anniversary Logo 001

Square Enix has revealed the official logo for the 40th anniversary of the Dragon Quest franchise. The logo itself highlights the cute and iconic Blue Slime, a mainstay monster and mascot since the series’ start in 1986.

The announcement came via the series’ official social media, with the added promise that further updates on the franchise will arrive later in the year.

As a series, Dragon Quest has been regarded as a foundational classic for JRPGs at large, with each of its 11 mainline games set in fantastical locales anchored by timeless artistic design from the late Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball Z, Dr. Slump, Sand Land). Each entry boasts a different conceit, from seafaring adventures (Dragon Quest VII) to generational legacy (Dragon Quest V) to classic travelogues (Dragon Quest) infused with deeply charming localisations that characterise its world with a deep and abiding love for rhyme and heart.

The latest entries in the series are the HD-2D remakes of Dragon Quest I, II, & III. If you’re curious about what RPGFan thought of them, feel free to check out the reviews for I & II and III by Zach Wilkerson.

With a new Dragon Quest remake on the horizon, it seems likely that news of Dragon Quest XII will come sometime during the year. Beyond that, it’s enjoyable to see such a venerated JRPG classic be celebrated for its long-running legacy within gaming. And that iconic overture!? Goosebumps when I hear it, every time!
