While I’ve only recently taken over running and writing intros for our weekly RPGs Coming This Week column, it’s been fun getting to introduce each week’s lineup. Both because there’s usually something coming out that looks promising, and I enjoy alluding to each release but saving the details for below. This week, we only have one game to talk about, so there’s not much to allude to. Still, Crimson Desert looks pretty cool and ambitious, so I hope it turns out well!

Crimson Desert – March 19th (PS5, XBX, Windows, macOS)

Pearl Abyss, makers of Black Desert, developed and is publishing our one game this week, Crimson Desert. And if a week is only going to have one big release, it may as well be what appears to be a massive open-world action adventure title. While the devs aren’t technically labeling it as an action RPG, it sure seems to share some DNA with them. The world design is impressive and the combat looks fluid with plenty of options. For those of us who like customizing our heroes and their attire, I’ve rarely seen so many color dye choices for clothing. Looking at a gameplay trailer, I see 110 shades of red, and if each main color has that many options, that’s 1,100 color choices, and with a system that seems to let you dye each part of your gear, that’s… well, it’s a lot of choice, that’s all I’m saying.
As for the rest of the game, Crimson Desert plops you in the potentially fashionable boots of Kliff, who loses his comrades following an ambush by his faction’s sworn enemies, the Black Bears. In a quest to find his scattered Greymane brethren, Kliff travels the continent of Pywel, visiting cities, villages, and seemingly one lush environment after another, encountering other beings as small as mere people, to tree-sized forest giants.
Oh, and there’s also a magical realm far up in the sky called the Abyss. That’s probably important! Crimson Desert is coming to PS5, Xbox, and Windows and macOS via Steam this week. Learn more and check out some footage of arm wrestling, all those dye colors, fishing, and uh, pig carrying…? on the game’s Steam page.
