New Petal Runner Demo Brings A Playful Slice of Pixellated City Life To Players on PC

A couple weeks ago, Iam8bit and developer Nano Park Studios have announced that a new demo for Petal Runner is available now on PC via Steam. It allows players to explore the second district of its setting, experience some of its minigames, and meet an array of NPCs and Hanapets—the game’s digital collectable critters to befriend and deliver via motorcycle couriering. This demo features new content compared to the version of the game Mario played at Summer Game Fest 2025, so even if you read his excellent hands-on peek, the new demo seems to have plenty of new things to check out.

Petal Runner Official Demo Launch Trailer

Petal Runner puts players in the role of Cali and her foxy sidekick, Kira, as they set their hearts and effort on becoming Petal Runners, an elite class of motorcycle courier specialising in delivering digital pets far and wide. From the above footage, the game centres itself in a retro-pixel aesthetic with Nano Park Studios citing the art style of various games found on the Game Boy Color as its key artistic inspiration.

Players will explore the isometric-angled streets of Sapphire Valley, the primary setting of the story, and engage in a wide variety of activities. These range from helping townsfolk solve their problems, engaging in minigames, and more, anchored by traversal via a stylish motorcycle. For a deeper look at what players might expect, check out an official synopsis below:

Petal Runner is a coming-of-age story set in a solarpunk, pixel-powered open world — dripping with Game Boy Color-era charm and a whole lot of heart.

Join Cali and their foxy sidekick Kira as the two fulfill their lifelong dream of becoming Petal Runners–an elite crew of motorcycle couriers. Deliver and install the newest, most impressive generation of digital pets across a vibrant coastal city.

Welcome To Sapphire Valley

Sapphire Valley is a coastal metropolis split into four districts, each with its own vibe, colour palette, and culture. You’ll meet all types of people, androids, and cute digital pets bursting with personalities that range from “charming,” to “wacky,” to “wait, stop… scratch-’n-sniff stickers are not actually food!”

Explore every gorgeous corner at your own pace. Take on side jobs. Chat up the locals — human or otherwise. Get into trouble. Get out of trouble. Get scolded by your boss because you were busy with heroic hijinks. (Whoops on that one.)

Hop On Your Bike!

Don’t let the retro-inspired visuals fool you — Cali’s hand-crafted motorcycle feels satisfying and intuitive as it cruises down the street. And the best part? You don’t have to get off your bike to talk to NPC’s! Hooray! (This was a whole thing during development, in case you were wondering!)

Plan your routes across highways and back roads, make your deliveries, and try not to get too distracted by the incredible scenery.

(WARNING: You will probably get distracted by the scenery. It’s REALLY pretty.)

Wholesome Storytelling

At the heart of Petal Runner is the lifelong friendship between Cali and Kira. Two best friends on a motorcycle, chasing a dream, making deliveries, cracking jokes — living the life they always wanted.

But beneath the candy-coloured pixels and upbeat soundtrack, something isn’t quite right. And just maybe, buried under all the sea breeze and neon, there are secrets lurking in the very heart of the corporation that built this world…

With hand-crafted pixel visuals by artist Brandon James Greer (YouTube: BJGpixel), and story contributions from award-winning writer Adam Dolin (God of War, Horizon: Forbidden West), enjoy this emotional (but still totally cozy and fun!) story inspired by classic gaming and 90s anime.

Petal Runner Screenshots

Since its reveal in 2024, I’ve been deeply curious about this game, as have several others at RPGFan, and it’ll be interesting to see it upon its full release later this year. It has everything one might want, right? Collectable critters, the feel of pixellated sun in your hair, and solarpunk stylings.

Petal Runner will release sometime in 2026 for PC via Steam.
