NIS America and developer Nippon Ichi Software have announced that Village in the Shade is headed westward this fall, with a release in Japan on July 30th. The stylised farming simulator — known in Japan as Honogurashi no Niwa — will launch for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 1 & 2, and PC via Steam.
A new trailer accompanied the announcement, showcasing hand-crafted environments, a spooky atmosphere, and the harvesting of crops. Check it out below!

NIS America has also announced that a Village in the Shade Limited Edition is currently available for pre-order for consoles retailing at $89.99 USD. It contains the base game, a collector’s box, an artbook, a soundtrack, an acrylic stand, a set of five enamel pins, and a sticker sheet. The Switch and PS5 editions seem to include standard physical games, while NISA confirms the Switch 2 version is a Game-Key Card package.
Village in the Shade will have players take on the role of a farmer in the secluded village of Kagatsu. In the pursuit of the harvest, they will plant crops, customise their farmstead, and meet a variety of inhabitants who make their home in the village or beyond. From the footage above, the game looks to fuse a painterly environmental aesthetic with a delightful anime stylisation for its character portraits. Of course, there’s another side lurking behind the colorful presentation — there’s a reason NIS includes “horror” in the game’s genres. For more information, check out the synopsis below:
Welcome to Kagatsu, a Japanese mountain village with plenty of secrets. In this brand-new, hand-painted farming sim, you’ll plant crops, customize your homestead, and befriend a cast of intriguing characters.
Relax by the brook, watch the cherry blossoms with your neighbors, or take a stroll through town. With so many ways to relax, you’re sure to feel right at home.
Just make sure to follow a few simple rules: don’t talk to strangers, don’t leave the village, and, whatever you do, don’t go out at night.
Unsettle Down: Make your new home feel like home! Buy furniture in town to decorate your house, then craft fences and other items with the resources you’ve gathered around your farm.
Festival Fun: Experience traditional Japanese festivals and activities, like the summer festival and cherry-blossom viewing. Get closer to your neighbors as you enjoy laid-back living.
Secrets Aren’t Meant to be Shared: Discover the truth about Kagatsu at your own risk, or follow the rules and keep from seeing a part of the village you don’t want to.

I’ll be curious to see if Village in the Shade brings a twist of something new to the farming simulator genre. With the pedigree that Nippon Ichi Software has in bringing Disgaea, Phantom Brave, and more, I have little doubt that it won’t prove entertaining at the very least.
Village in the Shade is set to release this fall for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 1 & 2, and PC via Steam.
