Winter Apple has announced that their upcoming visual novel Castle in the Sands will be released sometime in May for PC via Steam.

A trailer accompanied the announcement, depicting fated connections, exploratory choices across the sands, all rendered in a pixellated style. Check out below!

Castle in the Sands Trailer

Inspired by One Thousand and One Nights and North African culture, Castle in the Sands puts players in the role of a young hunter hailing from a small village deep in the desert. Due to the sudden illness of their younger brother, they embark on a trip for the unlikely chance to find a doctor. In a chance encounter with a young woman called Tirzi, they find themselves within the labyrinthine halls of the eponymous castle in the sands.

Winter Note has confirmed that the game will consist of between two and three hours of playtime, with choice-based gameplay leading players to one of three different endings. As seen in the footage above, the playspace and aesthetic of its environs are rendered in detail, whether in cracked columns framing the first-person point of view, its cast of characters, or the dunes of the desert.

As someone who enjoys visual novels, pixel aesthetics, and fairy-tale inspirations infused into an interactive story, I’m deeply curious what Castle in the Sands promises in its journey upon its release next month. For those also curious, you can wishlist it via its Steam page.
