Xbox Presents: A Special Look at Stranger Than Heaven
Stranger Than Heaven focuses on protagonist Makoto Daito across a half-century time span in five different cities across Japan, as he oscillates between a storied life as both a career criminal and a working showman. In that journey, he will meet a variety of people who will both aid and bar him from success. These characters are anchored by performers across film, television, and music, including Yu Shirota (Rookies), Dean Fujioka (Asa ga Akita), Moeka Hoshi (Shลgun), Akio Otsuka (Metal Gear Solid), Tokuma Nishioka (Tokyo Love Story), and Bunta Sagawara (My Grandpa), alongside musicians Snoop Dogg, Cordell Broadus, Ado, Tori Kelly, and Satoshi Fujihara.
Born to Japanese and American parents, Makoto suffers extreme prejudice for his mixed heritage after their passing and decides, alongside his brother-in-arms Yu Shinjo, to stowaway on a ship travelling to Japan in 1915. On that journey, he meets Orpheus, a smuggler and captain who takes him under his wing and mentors him as he is introduced to the criminal underworld.
Past that arrival, players will work their way as Makoto through five distinct cities in five different time periods. Ryu Ga Gotoku has confirmed that each represents both a concrete historical playspace for players to explore as well as a pivotal time in the life of Makoto. A brief list of all cities can be found below, sourced from the game’s official Steam page:
1915, Kokura, Fukuoka: home of what was said to be one of the worldโs largest foundries, a smoke-scorched town bursting with the passion of hard-driven, equally fiery workers.
1929, Kure, Hiroshima: a port town dominated by Japanโs largest naval arsenal and heavily influenced by the presence of yakuza organizations.
1943, Minami, Osaka: the biggest entertainment district in western Japan, set against the ever-rising tension of a world at war.
1951, Atami, Shizuoka: a bustling seaside getaway synonymous with tourism in postwar Japan.
1965, Shinjuku, Tokyo: Japanโs most iconic pleasure districtโa city of swirling and unpredictable chaos.
Intertwined with fifty years of history, Stranger Than Heaven will focus on two core aspects of the life of both a criminal and a showman, that of music and violence.ย
With guidance from Orpheus, Makoto will eventually take on the mantle of a showman who both contributes to and creates a wide array of musical acts over his lifetime, in what seems like a robust management sim.
In preparation for these acts, players will scout as Makoto to recruit both singers and performers in each time period to help the baseline for his act. Through exploration across the wider game, Makoto will collect a variety of sounds ranging from the rumbling of a train to the sweep from a broom to help compose original music for his performers to play. Then, through the creation of a setlist, choosing suited performers, and curated production design, players will guide Makoto and his rising star across a budding modern entertainment industry.
Combat looks to be anchored in a deeper fighting system than previous action-combatย Yakuza games, where players will control both the left and right sides of Makoto independently. In a fight, players might throw a punch with a left hand and block with their right, with combos mediated by their respective triggers and bumpers on a gamepad. Ryu Ga Gotoku has also promised a wide array of customisable and upgradeable weapons, including katanas, knives, and hammers, with more to be revealed.

Interesting dichotomies abound, right? It seems that Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios is primed to deliver a historical epoch on primarily a singular life in Stranger Than Heaven that fuses many of their strengths as a developer, such as ensemble cast stories, historical settings, novel mechanics, and detailed cinematic framing. As a last note, it’s all but confirmed from the first minute of that trailer that this is a prequel to the Like A Dragon/Yakuza series, acting as a seeming origin point for the notorious Tojo clan. As for any other familiar threads the game may explore, we’ll have to wait and see upon its release!
Stranger Than Heaven will release this winter on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam. It will also launch on Xbox Game Pass.
