Final Fantasy VII Revelation Gameplay Introduction
Anchored in the 30th anniversary of Final Fantasy VII‘s original release (1997), Final Fantasy VII Revelation will conclude the trilogy started with Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020) and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (2024).
It brings together a now-familiar ensemble of characters, that of Cloud, Aerith, Barret, Tifa, Yuffie, Red XIII, Cait Sith, Vincent Valentine, and Cid Highwind, towards a world-spanning adventure upon the airship Highwind. They must contend against the ever-present threat of Sephiroth as he seeks to bring Meteor down upon the planet, utilising the above-revealed gargantuan Weapons to enact his grand ambition of annihilation.
Players will accomplish this by travelling upon the Highwind across a hand-crafted open world, parachuting down seamlessly from the airship to entirely new environments, including the oft-mentioned land of Wutai, the Mideel Archipelago, and the snowy landscapes of the Northern Continent. Exploration and freedom seem to be key pillars for Final Fantasy VII Revelation, where players will be able to tackle where to travel, who to save, and what to do in any order during their playthrough.
Beyond exploration, players will contend against myriad foes, utilising what seems to be the apex of its hybrid real-time and Tactical Mode battle system. Notably, Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind will become playable characters for combat in Final Fantasy VII Revelation, both built with different playstyles in mind.
Vincent utilises rapid gunplay that alternates with bestial transformations, outputting extreme damage. Similar to the fan-favourite job of Dragoon, Cid Highwind utilises lance-based gameplay, leaping to and fro across the battlefield with metered combo chains that specialise in gap closers and area of effect abilities. Beyond these new editions, FFVII Revelation will introduce the FITS system, allowing players to equip new outfits that will give entirely new movesets to party members, with some based on classic Final Fantasy jobs such as Black Mage and Warrior.
Beyond the reveal, producer Yoshinori Kitase, director Naoki Hamaguchi, and creative director Tetsuya Nomura have released statements in celebration of Final Fantasy VII’s 30th anniversary and the reveal of Final Fantasy VII Revelation, honouring its legacy and thanking its fanbase. Check out each respective statement below!

As my favourite ongoing video game saga this decade, it’s heartening to see its ending firmly in sight. It looks like it infuses the best of what the previous games extol with a flair for flexibility, freedom, and player choice, which, in steady hands, can only be a good thing.
Final Fantasy VII Revelation will release sometime in spring 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox PC.
