Today’s Nintendo Direct presentation provided an in-depth look at the newest entry in the genre-defining tactical RPG series, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, releasing exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 on September 17th, 2026.

The Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave trailer kicks off with the first look of the world map showcasing three kingdoms: The Kingdom of Arago, The Kingdom of Brezarant, and the Dagdan Empire. The story focuses on the Dagdan Empire, specifically the capital city of Dagsian, host of the gladiatorial contest known as the Heroic Games. The reward for victory in the games is to have a single wish granted, and warriors from all over the continent converge on the city in order to test their mettle for a chance to win a wish granted by the gods.

The trailer formally introduces us to Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave‘s four main playable protagonists:

  • Cai, Kindhearted Boy from Ribeira Village: Cai is the youngest of the four protagonists and the most similar to a traditional Fire Emblem protagonist. He is determined to win the games to set free his imprisoned father, and possesses a strange gem affixed within his palm that grants him some sort of magic power.
  • Dietrich, Elegant Battle-Ready Swordsman: A mysterious swordsman with long white hair and black armor who seeks strong foes to test his might against. He wields a blade that looks similar to the Sacred Weapons from Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
  • Theodora, Queen of the Saramis Kingdom: An imposing woman who wishes to fulfill the dreams of her homeland. Her kingdom doesn’t appear on the map of the continent shown at the beginning of the trailer, suggesting she may be traveling to the games from a faraway land.
  • Leda, Musician Out for Revenge: Little information is given about Leda, other than that she is seeking revenge (on whom we aren’t told) and that she fights with both a sword and her instrument.

The trailer makes it clear that Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave will let you pick between these four protagonists and follow their journey throughout the Heroic Games, nodding to the four routes of Three Houses. The trailer also showcases the structure of the game, as major battles in the arena serve as key story points, but with free time between colosseum bouts to train your units, recruit various characters into your army and bond with them, and even embark on side quests outside the city. That last bit is particularly important, as a few scenes show an expansive world map full of nodes to explore, and the character navigating a dungeon environment in real time and opening a chest similar to the dungeon segments in Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia.

Connections to Fire Emblem: Three Houses are plentiful beyond just Dietrich’s Sacred Weapon, as the trailer shows Dietrich referencing Fodlan directly in dialogue scenes, suggesting that he may be from the continent where Three Houses takes place. In addition, the trailer ends with a much older-looking Sothis talking directly to the player in a possibly oblique reference to Those Who Slither in the Dark.

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave will be available on September 17th, 2026 digitally on the Nintendo eShop for $69.99, physically at retail for $79.99, and there is also a collector’s edition called the Dagdan Collection which is already sold out on Nintendo’s store website that includes a steel game case, character art cards, a map of Dagda, and an artbook. As of this writing, this edition is still available at other retailers such as Amazon.
