Publisher Koei Tecmo revealed the next Atelier series title, Atelier Karia: The Night Kingdom & the Guide of Memories, in the most recent Nintendo Direct presentation. The game was announced for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam with a release window of early 2027.

Atelier Karia: The Night Kingdom & the Guide of Memories Announcement Trailer

The trailer introduces us to new protagonist Karia, who appears to have amnesia and remembers only her own name. There are some quick shots of combat between Karia and various foes and traversal around a large, open environment, showcasing the combat system and open world exploration established by the previous entry Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land.

Speaking of Yumia, we see the back of a familiar looking character, while Karia mentions her by name, hoping to live up to her example, which made it clear even before it was confirmed that previous protagonist Yumia will return in this title in a mentor role to Karia. Karia seems to be new to this whole alchemy thing, as evidenced by her falling into the alchemy pot, and at the end of the trailer, attempting to take a bite out of a synthesized bomb as if it were an apple! I get the feeling that Karia’s amnesia and naivety will be used for comedic effect throughout the game.

Atelier Karia Media

While the initial reveal of Atelier Karia was light on details, Koei Tecmo has already shared more information, including an official synopsis and a major update to the just-launched official website:

In Atelier Karia: The Night Kingdom & the Guide of Memoriesplayers will return to the continent of Aladiss, first introduced in Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land. This new chapter follows amnesiac alchemist Karia on a profound quest centered on discovery and growth. Working together with Servio Lektor, a heretic biologist from the pioneering team, and Fina Rozen, a talented fighter, Karia sets out on a journey to explore Aladiss’ mysterious underworld to uncover its secret. Guided by alchemist Yumia Liessfeldt, Karia will develop her talent for alchemy whilst seeking to recover her lost memories, to reawaken the past and savor the present.

As usual, synthesis and alchemy are the core gameplay focus in Atelier Karia, and the system is designed to reward creativity and experimentation, as connecting “mana pieces” of different ingredients will affect the outcome, allowing for a large number of variations and results. Synthesized items will be usable in many different ways and settings, too. Some can be used in battle to your benefit, some can be used while exploring the game’s (beautiful) areas, and others are used as part of the building mode, to improve your base’s efficiency.

As you may guess from the trailer, and the sheer amount of screenshots of Karia eating…

…cooking is also a prominent mechanic in Atelier Karia, which seems to be built off of the series’ alchemic roots. Snacking on your creations, be they spiny sea urchins, a bubble-like fruit, or a… bomb… will bestow various effects. One example given is sprouting “animal” ears when eating animal-based components. No word on what kind of animal or what these ears do, but it’s a thing that can happen!

Meanwhile, the turn-based battle system will see some updates versus prior titles with the addition of “high-octane action” — including parrying attacks in real time while also being able to pause and strategically select skills to use.

Again, you can find a bit more info on the game’s official website. Atelier Karia: The Night Kingdom & the Guide of Memories is coming in early 2027 for PS5, Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. We’ll keep you updated as we learn more! But before you go…

An Update for Atelier Yumia, Too

Not content to rest on one single announcement, Koei Tecmo also announced (and released) a Switch 2 Edition of Atelier Yumia!

This enhanced version of last year’s mainline Atelier title promises enhanced graphics and an improved framerate, plus support for the Nintendo Switch 2’s GameShare feature, allowing players to cast the game to a Nintendo Switch to share Yumia’s journey in multiplayer. This Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of the game is available now, exclusively on the Nintendo eShop, and retails for $69.99 USD, though owners of the Switch 1 edition can get the upgrade pack for $10. However, the game and the upgrade pack are currently on sale until June 22nd for 43% off!
