As part of the recent IGN Live presentations, developer Sword & Axe announced the newest title in their Dark Deity series, Dark Deity 3, with a short but robust trailer. They are also quick to share that this latest title will serve as a “dramatic conclusion” to the three-game series.

Dark Deity 3 appears to be a direct sequel to the previous title, with many of the main characters shown alongside some new faces. Terrazael and its denizens were well-realized in Dark Deity 2, so a return to the same setting and characters is welcome. However, this is also a good reminder to play the previous title, as your experience will likely be improved by familiarity with the cast and world.

Sword & Axe sets the stage for Dark Deity 3 in their official synopsis:

The Eternal Order stands once again as the last line of defense against total collapse. As death cults spread across Terrazael, players will lead two armies across the living world and the afterlife, uncovering ancient secrets and battling to prevent an approaching apocalypse.

Dark Deity 3 follows Gwyn and Arthur Sildairan, heirs to the Eternal Order, as they lead separate campaigns against a growing darkness. Gwyn commands a military force tasked with rooting out death cults spreading throughout Terrazael, while Arthur leads a group of scholars into the afterlife to uncover the truth behind the gods themselves. Their journeys will ultimately shape the fate of the world.

Building on the strategic depth and player freedom that defined previous entries in the series, Dark Deity 3 offers an expansive tactical RPG sandbox filled with meaningful choices, army-building opportunities, and extensive replayability. Players can recruit 28 unique units, experiment with 74 classes, discover over 100 weapons, and create powerful combinations using more than 60 build-defining rings.

Much like previous Dark Deity games, Dark Deity 3 embraces a colorful, impressively animated pixel style that evokes the Game Boy Advance Fire Emblem titles. Although I personally wasn’t the biggest fan of the first Dark Deity, I found the sequel to be a huge improvement that stepped out of the shadow of the Fire Emblem series. Our own Audra Bowling agreed, giving the game an Editor’s Choice award in her review last year. If the series can continue this trend, then Dark Deity 3 will be a must-play for any strategy RPG fan.

Dark Deity 3 is currently only announced for PC via Steam releasing at an unknown time, but the last two entries came to Nintendo Switch as well, so keep an eye out for further information and additional platforms in the future!
