Girl Power Thrives in Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, Releasing December 3rd, 2026 on Consoles and PC

Although Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World was announced a couple weeks ago during the Dragon Quest series presentation, a full trailer showing off gameplay revealed the release date of December 3rd, 2026, and debuted during last week’s Nintendo Direct:

This iteration of the long-running Dragon Quest Monsters series stars Bianca and Nera from Dragon Quest V. An excellent choice, both because Dragon Quest V originated the monster taming mechanics for the series, and also because this marks the first Dragon Quest series title with only female protagonists! The trailer gives us a first look at gameplay, showing the “rolling log” style of world design popularized by Animal Crossing, where the world rotates as you move forward, and the landscape off in the horizon rolls into view. Turn-based combat is back, alongside the scouting method for obtaining new monsters. Additionally, you can “synthesize” (think fusion from Shin Megami Tensei) monsters into new combinations.

The game’s official US site is currently scant on details beyond the trailer. Thankfully, Gematsu translated additional details from the Japanese site, including confirmation that Nera’s bratty older sister Deborah returns (though not as a playable character). There will be a new Monster Marathon minigame where monsters advance automatically in a side-scrolling perspective and obtain items and experience while you give them commands.
