The Life and Suffering of Prince Jerian – July 20th (Windows)

The Life and Suffering of Prince Jerian is a narrative adventure RPG with gamebook-style presentation. You play the role of Prince Jerian, chosen by the gods to rule the Great Arknian Empire. The game follows the prince throughout his entire life, from childhood to adulthood to death, giving you the ability to make choices that will alter his fate and the fate of the entire kingdom. Managing the various factions (nobles, the clergy, and the peasantry) is key to successful rulership, and there are a wide variety of stats and parameters to manage as you guide Jerian through the many trials and tribulations of his life. If the spartan yet literary presentation doesn’t bother you (or even better, compels you) and you enjoy stories heavy with political intrigue, definitely keep an eye on this one.

The studio’s previous title, The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante, is currently free on Steam until July 23rd to celebrate the release of the sequel. Furthermore, Sir Brante is also releasing on Nintendo Switch & Switch 2 on July 20th for the first time!

Colossus – Eternal Blight – July 21st (Windows, Early Access)

Colossus – Eternal Blight is coming to Early Access on Steam this week after a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter earlier this year. The story follows Lucien, searching for his brother Lance in the kingdom of Eireos, a land being devoured by a dark force known as Blight. The game uses a familiar pixel art style with high-quality animation and flashy action combat mechanics. It also promises puzzles and exploration to break up the pace of combat encounters, similar to The Legend of Zelda series. It’s rare for a Kickstarter project to release something playable so soon after a successfully funded campaign, so that speaks to the confidence the developers have in their game. I can see why, as the screenshots and gifs on the Steam page look suitably impressive and fun!

Disgaea Mayhem – July 23rd (PS5, Switch, Switch 2, Windows)

Disgaea Mayhem is the newest title in Nippon Ichi Software’s long-running Disgaea franchise. This go around, NIS has ditched the turn-based strategy RPG for a flashy, fast-paced action RPG against huge crowds of colorful monsters. The game follows demon mercenary N.A., hired by newly appointed Overlord Tichelle to help her subjugate the rebelling demons of the Super Duper Netherworld. Disgaea series staples like the Item World, Dark Assembly, and even monster taming return despite the genre shift, which is good news for all the devoted fans out there. There is a free demo you can try now on all platforms, so give it a whirl before the game releases this week.

High Times – July 23rd (PS5, XBX, Switch, Windows, macOS, Linux)

If you’re ready to make some mood-altering donuts, this is your week! Donut-making gameplay meets visual novel presentation, decision-making, and a colorful and sometimes eccentric cast of characters in High Times from Filipino developer Yangyang Mobile. I briefly played the game during PAX East in March, and had a great time with it, even if I only saw a small slice of the game. Featuring colorful and inviting visuals, 30 characters to get to know, and over 50 endings, there’s more to the game than I knew this spring. The game is also loaded with voice talent, including Kira Buckland, Johnny Yong Bosch, and many more — check out Yangyang’s website for the full cast.

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster – July 23rd (Switch 2)

In honour of the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy X, return to Spira again. Protect Yuna, the young summoner, on her selfless pilgrimage across the land to harness the power needed to defeat the world-ending threat of Sin. It’s one of the Final Fantasy series’ most enchanting romances, settings, and narratives (and this writer’s personal favourite game of all time!). Then, in Final Fantasy X-2, swap outfits and roles on the fly and tinker with one of the most interesting and underrated battle and job systems in the franchise.

The Switch 2 port features 4K resolution docked and 1080p handheld, the ability to switch between languages and the original and enhanced soundtracks, as well as the quality-of-life modifiers seen on the previous PC version: XP boosts, max gil, avoid enemy encounters, turbo speed, and so on. One downside is that there is no upgrade path or discount for owners of the Switch 1 version (in typical Square Enix fashion). Still, this is a game any RPGFan owes themselves to play.
