Terranigma Returns in 2027 [Updated]

Despite rumors, I couldn’t believe it until I saw it, but at today’s Pixel Arcadia showcase, publisher Clear River Games revealed the return of Terranigma, coming next year. See the debut trailer below:

It’s been over five years since Terranigma‘s composer, Miyoko Takaoka (maiden name Kobayashi) and artist Kamui Fujiwara, openly revealed their wish for a revival of the beloved title. Perhaps to the relief of many a retro RPG fan, this isn’t a remake, as it features the same visuals as the original, down to the classic 90s Enix font in dialogue boxes that many players will remember.

The trailer also showcases a ton of new artwork by original artist Kamui Fujiwara, whom Clear River Games says will be “providing new key art and in-game designs, as well as feedback on the production.” Fujiwara also had the following to say about this new release of Terranigma:

30 years ago, Terranigma was released on the SNES. Now, at long last it will be available once again on console and PC, digital and physical. It may not be exactly the same as it was back then, but I’m sincerely delighted about it making its return to the current gaming environment. During the original’s development, I was involved with designing  not only the characters, but the world too, and even some of the game settings as well.I hope the themes of god and humanity, creation and destruction, and the atmosphere of the world itself resonate with today’s players too. Not as a relic of the past, but as a living, breathing work. This moment has been long awaited and now it is finally here. I hope you will enjoy it with all your heart.

If you’re unfamiliar with Terranigma, well, that’s certainly understandable. This 1995 SNES action RPG did not officially see a release in North America, even though the other games in the unofficial “series,” Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia, did. Famously, Terranigma did release in Europe, despite RPGs often being overlooked in the region at the time.
