After the fantastic remake of its predecessor in 2024, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, developer Xeen and publisher Square Enix team up once more for a fully-fledged remake of the 1995 Super Famicom follow up, Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United, with a trailer debuting at this week’s Nintendo Direct:
Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United Reveal Trailer
Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United features a fully rebuilt world much like Revenge of the Seven, expanding the scale and scope of the environments and level of interactivity (for example, the trailer showcases the player traversing a craggy jungle using magical ziplines). The distinct character designs of Tomomi Kobayashi have been lovingly adapted to the new 3D models, with a higher level of detail compared to the previous entry, and the reorchestrated soundtrack from composer Kenji Ito teased in the trailer promises to be exquisite.
The story revolves around the Rise of Morastrum, a disaster which strikes every 300 years and wipes out all newborn babies except for one, the Child of Destiny. The Child of Destiny can be a blessing or curse: 600 years past, they became an evil force known as the Archfiend, casting the world into darkness until 300 years prior to the events of the game the next Child of Destiny (a hero known as the Matriarch) defeated the Archfiend. Now the Morastrum is occurring again, and each of the eight protagonists become embroiled in the hunt for the next Child of Destiny, who may be humanity’s savior or the harbinger of their doom.
The trailer introduces each of the eight protagonists you can choose between:
- Julian, a youth with a strong sense of justice.
- Sarah, a girl finding her place in the world.
- Ellen, Sarah’s protective older sister.
- Thomas, a sharp-witted man of esteemed upbringing.
- Monika, a princess bearing the burden of nobility.
- Mikhail, a young Marquis leading a nation.
- Katarina, a swordswoman loyal to her cause
- Khalid, a mercenary from a ruined kingdom.
Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United abandons the generational structure and empire building of the previous title, instead focusing on the choice between eight protagonists each with their own storylines and motivations during the hunt for the Child of Destiny. This set up is much more similar to titles like SaGa Frontier, Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song, and SaGa Scarlet Grace. The narrative is still non-linear, utilizing the series’ trademark Free Scenario System which allows you to complete side quests and progress the story in any order, with the choices you make having significant ramifications on how the narrative will unfold. Beyond the eight protagonists, there are over 20 unique allies you may recruit to fill out your party, each with their own classes and skillsets.
The Battle Timeline and United Attacks introduced in Revenge of the Seven make a return as well, allowing you to plan around and manipulate the turn order in battle to your advantage, or bypass the timeline to combine attacks into one powerful series of strikes. The Glimmer system for discovering new skills mid-battle and the strategic Formation system that buffs your party according to their setup on the battlefield also return, providing the hefty challenge and unpredictable progression that SaGa series fans know and love. Additionally, Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United features two minigames that shift the gameplay style: the War Mode minigame and the Business minigame.
