This month is packed with game releases, though this week is likely the smallest edition of RPGs Coming This Week for October, with a variety of re-releases, headlined by a beefed up Dragon’s Dogma 2. We also highlight a cool Playdate title, ten Kingdom Hearts titles, and the last platform for The Relic: First Guardian‘s staggered release.

Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen – October 9th (PS5, Switch 2, XBX, Windows)

Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen brings back Capcom’s grand scale open-world action RPG two years later with a host of mechanical improvements and new content. Chief among these additions is a new, snowy region called Norgan designed for high level characters complete with its own 20-hour storyline. This region has its own unique gameplay elements more akin to a hack-and-slash title according to producer Naoto Oyama, and a new equipment called Relics that offer substantial modifications to players’ approach to combat and character progression. Dark Arisen also adds 12 new “Lost Rites” dungeons, complete with their own distinct monster encounters and gameplay mechanics.
Our own Izzy Parsons adored the original game in 2024, and this expansion seems poised to revitalize the game for returning players and newcomers alike, just as the Dark Arisen expansion did for the first Dragon’s Dogma back in 2013. I’m personally very excited to return to the harsh world of Dragon’s Dogma 2 this week.

Also Coming This Week

Gloom Gate (Season 3 Bundle) – October 8th (Playdate)
Gloom Gate launched on the Playdate in early September, but this week it will be available as part of a Season Three bundle. Since the first season, Panic’s cute little handheld with a crank has featured many creative titles, so I love seeing developers continue to come up with cool ideas, and Gloom Gate‘s 3D third-person action RPG gameplay looks shockingly good in black and white. I’m just going to add this to my list of Reasons to Get a Playdate.

Kingdom Hearts Collection [I-III] – October 8th (PS5, Switch 2, XBX)
Gawrsh, you mean to tell me the entire Kingdom Hearts series (sans Melody of Memory, the rhythm game I quite liked!) is re-bundled here on modern consoles? Wow! That’s Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, Kingdom Hearts III, and, bundled for the first time, III‘s DLC Re Mind. I could spend a thousand words typing all those individual titles out, or you can check Square Enix’s website. Players who own previous gen versions of the collected… collections are eligible for a 50% discount. Ahead of the projected late 2027 launch of Kingdom Hearts IV and a new story saga, you can catch up on this beloved series with a story as earnest as its hero, Sora, Disney crossovers as ridiculous as Goofy, and lore as unintelligible as Donald Duck. And that’s why we love it.

The Relic: First Guardian – October 9th (Switch 2)
The Relic: First Guardian graced PCs and PS5 earlier this summer on July 31st, and Xbox on September 25th. Now it’s time for the Switch 2 edition. So if you’re a Switch 2 player, this week you too can play the game set in a world that our own Matt Wardell described as “an endlessly tedious, bloated pile of reused assets.” In fairness to the developer and publisher, in the seven weeks since it launched, the game has been patched 18 (!?) times. I don’t know if 18 patches in seven weeks is ultimately a good or bad thing, but hopefully The Relic: First Guardian is in a better place than it was in July, between these updates and the game’s recent permanent price reduction.
