Crowdfunding Chronicles

Crowdfunding Chronicles: Aquamarine

Campaign Ends: February 25

Platform: Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Greetings! I am here today to tell you about my deep admiration for the art of Moebius, and my joy in discovering a new game inspired by his style, alongside other sci-fi favorites such as Hayao Miyazaki’s Nausicaa. Let us dance and rejoice!

Ahem. Aquamarine, the game in question, is a relaxing, turn-based survival adventure with point-and-click elements and a vast world full of mysteries to solve. You play as a space explorer whose ship runs into trouble after receiving a mysterious signal. Forced to evacuate in a small emergency pod, you crash land on a strange aquatic planet, while your ship firmly plants itself halfway across the world. Dang. Search for your missing spacecraft while uncovering the secrets of this unusual planet, and find out why your voyage was interrupted in the first place; just don’t forget to eat along the way!

Though Aquamarine is meant to be more relaxing than the usual survival game, there will still be plenty of problems to deal with, including the ever-present threat of starvation. During your search, you’ll need to grow plants or scavenge through remains to feed yourself, find crystals and other material to repair and upgrade your little pod, and deal with the local wildlife. No two playthroughs will be the same, taking into account weather systems, the day and night cycle, and creatures that react to environmental conditions… including your impact. Will you take care to preserve the natural world while you search for your vehicle, or recklessly plow your way through the local flora and fauna? Decide carefully, as there is no turning back from your decisions; the game autosaves along the way.

While Aquamarine is already fully funded, stretch goals are set to add additional story scenes, full voice acting, and a completely new alien biome. More strange scenery? Yes please!

I’ll be honest: based on the art style alone, I’d be excited about this game even if it were some kind of tax-calculating sim. Thankfully, we’re being treated to something much more intriguing (for the majority of us, in any case). Time to go dust off my old space suit and grab some beef jerky; planetary adventures await!

Before I go, if you’re curious about the game, the developers have a pre-alpha demo available from Itch or Game Jolt. This demo will also be updated over time with bug fixes too.

Disclaimer: While it’s possible some of us at RPGFan may be backers of the games mentioned in these articles, this does not influence our coverage or our featured game choices. We make our selections simply based on the active campaigns we feel our readers might find interesting, and we are not given special access or perks by the developers.

tl;dr: We think these games show potential and want to share them with you.
