RPGFan Music of the Year 2024 Editors’ Favorites: Audra Bowling

Music of the Year 2024 Header

There were some amazing RPG and visual novel music releases in 2024. Here are six that I particularly enjoyed!

The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak OST

This mini-soundtrack released with the Limited Edition copy of The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak was only available through the NIS America store. Honestly, you can throw a stick at a Falcom soundtrack and hit a great song, and that remains the case here, even though this album only features a handful of tracks from the overall game soundtrack!

Highlighted Track: “Rise of the Grendel”

Paper Perjury Original Game Soundtrack

Paper Perjury is a delightful indie visual novel that successfully pays homage to the Ace Attorney series. The soundtrack beautifully captures the feel of the game’s setting and characters, and I especially love the dynamic and passionate BGMs that accompany intense investigation and interrogation sequences during paper clerk Justina’s adventures.

Highlighted Track: “Reveal the Truth”

Final Fantasy XVI -Original DLC Soundtrack- From Spire to Sea

Final Fantasy XVI is a game with a phenomenal soundtrack, and that remains true of the music tracks for its The Rising Tide DLC expansion. I greatly enjoyed playing this portion of the game’s narrative, in large part because of how great the BGMs are!

Highlighted Track: “Cascade”

Stray Gods: Orpheus

The DLC expansion for Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical, Stray Gods: Orpheus, features several memorable songs with musical numbers that might even be stronger than the base game’s! This is certainly because Anthony Rapp as Orpheus brings so much passion and depth to his performance, and the other characters belt out some amazing tunes too.

Highlighted Track: “Back from the Dead (Largest)”

Beloved Rapture Original Soundtrack

The soundtrack for traditional indie RPG Beloved Rapture both excellently encapsulates and pays homage to 16-bit RPG OSTs to great effect, making the music stand out. The BGMs are catchy, perfectly complementing the game’s atmosphere.

Highlighted Track: “Battle Theme 2”

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn (Original Soundtrack)

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn has an emotive and moving soundscape to go along with its Souls-lite action RPG gameplay. I adore several of the game’s atmospheric BGMs, though it’s the hauntingly powerful main theme, aptly titled “Flintlock,” that remains constantly in my head.

Highlighted Track: “Flintlock”
