Mother to Earth Documentary Teaser Trailer Highlights EarthBound Beginnings

A new teaser trailer for the Mother to Earth documentary offers a taste of what fans can expect, including a deep dive into the canceled localization for the first outing in the Mother series. Chronicling the 25 years between the game’s original Japanese release on the Famicom and its eventual Western release on the Virtual Console service for Nintendo’s Wii U in 2015, the documentary offers a wealth of information about the cult classic straight from key members of the localization team. You can see the trailer for yourself below for all of the teasing you can handle.

Originally slated for a 1991 release under the title Earth Bound, the cancelation and subsequent leak of the ROM for Mother is unlike anything else in gaming history. Though the series would make its Western debut on the Super Nintendo with 1995’s EarthBound, the Mother series has developed a devout following outside of Japan despite multiple cancelations and a lack of releases — looking at you, Mother 3.

Mother to Earth was originally funded by a Kickstarter campaign, but those who missed out can pre-order their own copy, or even some neat merch, from the official site, so be sure to check it out.
