Back in October, we posted an article letting y’all know that Dragon Quest Tact, a mobile strategy RPG that’s already cracked a whopping 10 million downloads in Japan, would be arriving in the west sometime in early 2021. The thing about “early 2021” placeholders is that we really don’t know if that means January, February, March, or even further down the pipeline. Sometimes, publishers treat the word “early” as the antonym of “late.” Which, hey, that’s true. But it also ends up implying that an early-year release might not make it until as late as June.
I’ve rambled enough within the realm of semantics. You’ve read this article’s title. You already know that this amusingly-named new Dragon Quest experience is right around the corner for the bulk of our readership base. Perhaps you’re unfamiliar with the game and interested in learning more?
Well, to begin with, Dragon Quest Tact is indeed a mobile-only affair. If that’s an inherent turnoff for you, I totally understand. I used to feel similarly! That said, there’s enough depth involved here to color me curious nonetheless. I’ll let Square Enix’s Dragon Quest Tact page do the talking here:
In DRAGON QUEST TACT, players will embark on an epic, tactical journey to diminish the evil that plagues the world of Orchesterra and join forces with familiar DRAGON QUEST series monsters along the way in order to save the world. Players will strategically build teams of iconic DRAGON QUEST monsters and direct them in heated tactical battles that unfold on a grid-like map. Along the way, players can recruit new monsters as allies and upgrade their favorites to take on more ferocious battles. New and more experienced players can enjoy this new form of combat in this simple-yet-deep tactical RPG game that features a large roster of beloved monsters.
Maybe it’s the Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre diehard in me, but I confess to a giddy little adrenaline rush whenever I discover a grid-based strategy JRPG of any sort. Toss in the Dragon Quest flavor, complete with the franchise’s trademark charming monster designs, and I’m interested.
RPGFan will provide continuous coverage of Dragon Quest Tact in the months to come!
