There’s a WWE RPG in the Works, with More Info Coming Soon

In their recent Q1 corporate earnings call, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) chief brand manager Stephanie McMahon revealed that a WWE-themed RPG is in development, with an official announcement to come “soon.” Here’s McMahon’s exact comments from the call (courtesy of Eurogamer).

[WWE] recently signed a new deal in the role-playing game space that will be announced soon. We also continue to evaluate the metaverse, both walled garden environments that already exist as well as decentralised properties, look to hear more in the coming months.

I’m curious about the shape this game will take. Historically, WWE’s annual wrestling sims have contained various modes featuring RPG elements, such as stat levelling and dialogue trees, so the concept probably isn’t that novel. We also recently reported on WrestleQuest, an upcoming turn-based RPG by independent dev Mega Cat Studios. Notably, that game will spotlight several iconic grapplers remembered for their tenure with the company, such as Andre the Giant and Randy Savage. Once more details surface, I think it’ll be interesting to compare WrestleQuest with an RPG based on the product of the globe’s largest purveyor of pro wrestling (or sports entertainment, in their parlance).
