Star Trek: Resurgence Launches at Last on May 23rd

A major character in Star Trek: Resurgence reflects on their situation against a starry backdrop

It’s been a long road, getting from there to here, but developer Dramatic Labs has announced that their twice-delayed narrative-driven space adventure, Star Trek: Resurgence, has a firm release date of May 23rd.

Dramatic Labs may or may not ring any bells for readers, but it’s an independent studio consisting of former Telltale Games personnel, so it’s safe to say they’re veterans of this particular style of gameplay. From there, the question’s a simple one – do you like Star Trek? If so, the chance to spend some time with iconic characters like Ambassador Spock sounds downright lovely. I should know — I am, in fact, a Star Trek fan.

Star Trek: Resurgence Overview

Star Trek: Resurgence is a bold interactive narrative game set shortly after Star Trek: The
Next Generation’s timeline. A worker uprising threatens the tenuous peace between two alien
civilizations, and Starfleet is forced to intervene. Players experience the conflict and larger
mystery from two key perspectives. The U.S.S. RESOLUTE’s First Officer Jara Rydek is part
of the diplomatic envoy led by Ambassador Spock that’s tasked with finding a resolution –
and uncovering the ultimate source of this tense situation. Engineering Crewperson Carter
Diaz highlights how the mission plays out from the lower decks, caught up in the events in
his own unique way. Throughout the gripping story, players can interact with the Star Trek
universe like never before, with moments of authentic action and critical decisions that shape
the broader narrative in subtle and unexpected ways.

For the uninitiated, Star Trek: The Next Generation took place during the fictional Trek universe’s years of 2364 and 2371, with feature films slated up until 2379. Previous developer commentary has indicated that Resurgence occurs after Nemesis, so you can pencil in around 2380 if you’re curious. On the other hand, the preceding statement may mean absolutely nothing to you — which is OK. All you really need to know is this is the era where Picard was doing Picard things, rather than Kirk doing Kirk things. Even though Spock is still around, yes. Vulcans live a long time (and prosper).

More importantly, Star Trek: Resurgence appears to be pulling more from diplomacy-centric Star Trek games of yore, rather than phasers-first pew-pew combat extravaganzas. There’s nothing inherently wrong with the latter, but fans of the former have fond memories of old classics like Star Trek: 25th Anniversary and its sequel, Judgment Rites, along with the TNG-era entry, A Final Unity. It’s nice to have another game to look forward to that focuses on the franchise’s tendency toward finding avenues of storytelling resolution that don’t always involve blowing stuff up.

I’m a little worried about Star Trek: Resurgence‘s significant delays; it was originally slated for Spring 2022, after all. But we won’t have to wait long to see how it all goes down. Resurgence beams aboard PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC (via Epic Games Store) on May 23rd.
