Horror enthusiasts rejoice! Developer Panstasz and publisher Ysbryd Games announced at last week’s Guerrilla Collective Showcase that their creepy “1-bit” roguelite RPG World of Horror is leaving Early Access and is coming out October 19th for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, and PC via Steam, itch.io, GOG, and the Microsoft Store! While it’s not coming out this summer like they were planning, at least it will be just in time for Halloween!

World of Horror Overview

The year is 198X. Madness plagues the residents of the seaside town of Shiokawa. The Old Gods have returned to satiate their bottomless hunger for despair. Unspeakable monstrosities hide around every corner. Investigate the harrowing happenings, perform arcane rituals with scavenged artifacts in an attempt to delay the inevitable, or crumble with the Earth itself.

Take on dreadful mysteries as 14 playable characters, each with their own stats and perspectives on the blight before them. Unlock new characters to face the horrors with each playthrough, and figure out survival strategies that lean into their strengths and shore up their weaknesses. Manage both health and sanity in the face of terrifying encounters, cruel curses, and unfathomable settings via procedurally generated events.

Fight to stay alive in classic RPG turn-based combat with fists, kicks, or scavenged makeshift weapons found on location. Consider purchasing weapons and combat accessories from masked lunatics and shiba inu shopkeepers. Choose battle tactics wisely, as every decision can cause life, death, or madness. Explore every corner to uncover clues, collect helpful trinkets, and more along the way to reach the least harmful
of multiple endings.

Delve into 20 curated mysteries with endless replayability. For those craving more content, modding tools in the PC version can provide access to custom mysteries devised by the fiendish imagination of fellow players, or even to create one’s own mysteries.

Fill in the stylistic gaps of what lies behind each corner in its 1-bit artwork crafted entirely on Microsoft Paint and inspired by vintage Macintosh graphics. With its eerie rural city scenes and psychologically thrilling monsters and bosses, WORLD OF HORROR feels like a page torn straight from the works of Junji Ito and H.P Lovecraft.

Along with this announcement, there is also a new release date trailer!

I know at least one person who would be absolutely thrilled by this news! The Junji Ito and H.P. Lovecraft inspiration for World of Horror really shows and is sure to delight anyone who is into being scared out of their britches! I’m personally really digging the visual style. I’m not too into horror games myself, but this one seems like it might be an easier one to check out compared to the gross, gory, and hyper-violent modern movies and video games. If it’s horror, I’d rather have the creepy vibes and solemn undertones similar to Fragile Dreams… though World of Horror probably isn’t too much like that game at all!
