Trails of Cold Steel III originally came out in 2017 for Japan and in 2019 for the rest of the world. Meanwhile, Trails of Cold Steel IV launched in 2018 for Japan and in 2020 everywhere else. Both games are available on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. This is probably obvious, but you can already play Trails of Cold Steel III and IV on PS5 through that nifty backwards compatibility with PS4, though the PS5 release also includes cosmetic DLC packs.
It’s worth noting that NISA is showing Trails of Cold Steel III & IV for PS5 as a two-pack, and we don’t know if they will also be available separately. Though given the nature of the series, a bundle makes sense. From the press release:
Following the Erebonian Civil War, war hero Rean Schwarzer begins life anew as an instructor at Thors Military Academy’s branch campus. Join him as a brand new Trails adventure unfolds in The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III / The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV! Experience the full story of Rean and the new Class VII as they deal with the aftermath of war and the appearance of new threats in this dynamic combo pack!
Dive into the world of Trails and enjoy in-depth RPG gameplay that performs better than ever on PlayStationⓇ5. These iterations of the Trails series will also include bonus cosmetic DLC that will have your party members looking their best! Discover the wonders of Erebonia today!
NISA also announced the immediate pre-order availability of The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III / Trails of Cold Steel IV PS5 Limited Edition in the NIS Store, which you can peep below. The $99.99 USD price tag will net you the games, digital soundtrack, TWO art books, a cloth map, art cards, and postcards all in a slick box:
NIS also gave us new screens from development builds of the two games, seen below.
If you’re a series newbie wanting to know if III and IV are good to start with, might I suggest our Trails series primer? Trails is daunting to get started with considering the games are largely chronological, so I definitely recommend consulting our guide penned by a bonafide series veteran.
Trails of Cold Steel III and Trails of Cold Steel IV launch on PS5 in early 2024.
