Rebel Wolves Reveal Dawnwalker, Creative Director in Landmark Week

Polish studio Rebel Wolves has started the year right by revealing Dawnwalker, its first RPG. The announcement was accompanied by some striking red and black key art and news of the appointment of CD Projekt Red veteran Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz as the studio’s creative director. Mateusz, one of eight ex-CDPR staff in Rebel Wolves’ core development team, joins his brother Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, who was a director on The Witcher 3 and is the new studio’s CEO and game director.

In a statement provided by Rebel Wolves, Mateusz spoke on the studio’s creative vision and passion for making high-quality, story-driven RPGs:

Throughout all my years in game development, story-driven role-playing adventures have always been something I was most passionate about. For me, nothing beats being able to fully immerse myself and discover handcrafted stories and worlds. There are so many fantastic RPGs out there today, however, I feel that there’s not only enough space but also a hunger among players for more captivating stories. That’s why I’m very happy to join many of my old-time friends and meet many new ones at Rebel Wolves as a Creative Director. We aim to deliver the RPG we’d love to play ourselves.

We want to craft a world that you will want to explore and dive deep into and tell stories that make you care about the characters. We aim to deliver an experience that will allow for a variety of choices and room for experimentation when replayed. Helping craft this experience with so many talented people will be my mission at Rebel Wolves, and I can’t wait for everyone to see what the team has been up to for quite a while now.

Established in 2022, Rebel Wolves has a simple but ambitious mission statement: to “revolutionise the RPG Genre” by not making just another game but “the game”. The studio also proclaims to be creating an environment where “developers can thrive”, united towards a common goal of making the world’s best RPGs.

This prioritization of the team and work environment is perhaps a reaction to the widely reported crunch associated with the development of CDPR’s Cyberpunk 2077 and more recent layoffs from the Witcher series developer, which resulted in the establishment of Poland’s first Game Developers Union. Whatever the reason might be for this focus, it can only benefit the company and its projects to foster a culture that respects its developers’ time and creative efforts.

Dawnwalker Details

Dawnwalker appears to center on vampires in a dark medieval fantasy setting. The new image and a previous piece of key art (seen above) focus on a vampiric male figure with taloned fingers. The earlier image also had the figure baring bloodied fangs whilst surrounded by bats. You don’t need to be Anne Rice to work out what direction this game is taking.

Considering the pedigree of Rebel Wolves’ core staff and the intriguing details provided so far, fans of the Witcher series and dark fantasy RPGs should savour every scarlet drop of info about Dawnwalker.

RPGFan will bring readers more details about Dawnwalker as they emerge from the crypt.

When he’s not writing for RPGFan, you’ll find him nonchalantly leaning against the ballroom wall being the “best looking guy here.” …whatever.
