Free-to-Play Elden Ring Mobile Game in the Works

According to a recent Reuters report, Tencent is working on a free-to-play mobile adaptation of 2022’s Game of the Year, Elden Ring. [Editor’s Note: We gave it the runner-up spot, but many outlets did consider it the GOTY that year.]

Neither developer FromSoftware nor publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment have made an official announcement.

In 2022, Tencent acquired licensing rights to the open-world Souls-like hit. While I can’t imagine Elden Ring‘s gameplay being turned into a free-to-play gacha(?) title, I’m curious how it would turn out.

As a testament to its massive success, Bandai Namco confirmed that the game sold more than 20 million copies globally a year after it released. Our review of the PC release gave it a whopping 99, touting it “the best Dark Souls game to date.”

In summary, there are credible reports of a mobile Elden Ring game in development, but no official word has been given as of yet. One thing that’s coming for sure: a DLC expansion to the original game called Shadow of the Erdtree. No release date yet, though.

Elden Ring is available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4.
