During today’s Sony State of Play, a group of RPGFan staff were ready for some announcements, but maybe not too much for our coverage. VR games (kinda cool), some Astro Bot (cute), when suddenly a great glowing celestial body arose; Lunar Remastered Collection, coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and Microsoft Windows via Steam in Spring 2025. Jaws dropped, messages were all in caps, Zach Wilkerson even dropped his cat, though I believe the cat is OK. It’s safe to say we’re extremely excited! Publisher GungHo Online Entertainment shared the announcement trailer below, revealing a tasteful, pixel perfect widescreen remastering of Lunar: Silver Star Story and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue.

What updates await in Lunar Remastered Collection? Beyond the widescreen support and improved pixel art you can see above (you will be able to toggle between this and the original art), GungHo notes the HD animated cutscenes and all-new English voice acting. There is a new setting to speed up battles and “improved strategy settings,” though this has not yet been fully detailed. Finally, both games will be available in Japanese, English, and for the first time, German and French, as well.

This remaster will be the first for Lunar: The Silver Star since 2009’s Lunar: Silver Star Harmony, whilst Lunar 2 waiting nearly 25 years, since Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete was released for the Sega Saturn and PlayStation One in 2000. Both titles have ample reviews available through their respective game pages, all in the 80+ range. On the RPGFan podcast front, Lunar: The Silver Star was revisited in Retro Encounter 396.

Over on the PlayStation Blog, GungHo Product Coordinator Asca Akiyama shared info on the Lunar titles, covering the basics of the Lunar Remastered Collection and what fans can expect:

The series that started it all

When the games first released in the β€˜90s, Lunar was a pioneer of its time, often credited as being one of the first JRPGs to become popular in the West. With the upcoming release of Lunar Remastered Collection, we invite you to experience (or re-experience) this iconic title that shaped the JRPG genre.

The adventure begins – Lunar: Silver Star Story

Lunar: Silver Star Story begins in the quiet village of Burg, where a boy named Alex dreams of grand adventures inspired by the tale of Dragonmaster Dyne. Enticed by adventure and treasure, Alex and his friends set off on a quest, but with the sudden emergence of the Magic Emperor who wishes to control the world, it’s up to them to fight the rising evil and save the world from peril.

The legacy continues – Lunar 2: Eternal Blue

Set 1000 years after Lunar: Silver Star Story, Lunar 2: Eternal Blue follows a young adventurer named Hiro, who encounters a mysterious visitor from the Blue Star while exploring an ancient tower. Named Lucia, she insists that she be taken to the ruler of their world, Goddess Althena. Together, Hiro and Lucia encounter the best of allies, the worst of enemies, and the darkest forces of destruction that threaten the whole of creation.
