Square Enix has released a development update and new screenshots for Kingdom Hearts IV, marking the first we’ve heard about the game since its reveal in early 2022. Both came via social media posts on the franchise’s English and Japanese X accounts:
To our Kingdom Hearts community, We’re currently working hard on Kingdom Hearts IV and will continue pouring ourselves into the game’s development. We’re dedicated to making this an experience that lives up to your expectations!
We’ve seen how excited you are, and we are truly grateful from the bottom of our hearts. We are equally excited and can’t wait to share more about Kingdom Hearts IV when the time is right. Until then, we appreciate your patience. Thank you for your continued support.
Beyond the confirmation of ongoing development, the released screenshots showcase snapshots of characters familiar to casual and longtime fans of the franchise such as Mickey Mouse and series protagonist Sora. Interestingly, it seems that Mickey will join Sora as a playable character. Beyond that, all the screenshots seem to be set in Quadratum, a Tokyo-esque modern cityscape, with no sign of other worlds, Disney or otherwise.
Kingdom Hearts IV Screenshots

This news comes after the unfortunate cancellation of Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link, a mobile RPG that was intended to link Kingdom Hearts III and IV.
Still, it is heartening to see a development update on Kingdom Hearts IV, confirming that the mainline series still holds a place at Square Enix alongside its slate of high-profile releases across the last half a decade. As a longtime fan, I’m deeply curious to see what else the franchise has in store when Kingdom Hearts IV eventually releases.
