RPGs Coming This Week, 6/1/25

RPGs Coming This Week with art from Bravely Default, Deltarune, Rune Factory, Zelda, Cyberpunk 2077, Yakuza 0

The Nintendo Switch 2 arrives on June 5th, and I’m happy to report that it’s already stacked from top to bottom with blockbuster RPGs. Granted, the lineup is mostly remasters or ports of games we’ve likely played before. The handful of straight-up new stuff that is here will also be accessible on other platforms, including the original Switch, so we really won’t miss out on much… yet.

In any case, what is this column if not the place to learn about shiny new products you absolutely, without a shadow of a doubt, need to buy right now? Join us, dear reader, as we take stock of every RPG coming this week!

Deltarune – June 4th (PS5, PS4, Switch 2, Switch, Windows)

My personal favorite surprise of the initial Switch 2 Direct was the appearance of Deltarune. I’m so excited to finally continue this sometimes scary, often funny and consistently brilliant pseudo-sequel to Undertale (which is almost a decade old now, by the way…). Deltarune is best appreciated with knowledge of the events of Undertale, even though its connections to the latter remain unclear.

Chapter 1 of Deltarune dropped unexpectedly in 2018, followed by chapter 2 in 2021, and now we’re getting the next two on June 4th (June 5th in Japan and Oceania). While the first two installments came out as freebies, this latest release combines everything into a single, paid package. Considering subsequent chapters will be released as free DLC (great value!) and the fact that it’s a damn Toby Fox game, I strongly recommend it. For Switch owners, it’s cross-buy, so you can play this game on Switch 2 if you eventually get one.

Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster – June 5th (Switch 2)

A remaster of the original Bravely Default was rumored for quite some time. Series mastermind Tomoya Asano all but confirmed it at one point, so I’m not at all surprised that Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster officially became a thing. I’m just relieved there’s one less game (one less classic, I daresay) stuck on the Nintendo 3DS, even though it looks to be exclusive to the Switch 2 for now.

Bravely Default is remembered fondly for many reasons, not least of which is the innovative battle system from which it gets its name. Each turn, players receive a certain number of “brave points” that they can either “Brave” (i.e., spend to execute additional actions) or “Default” (i.e., conserve for later turns). This adds a layer of complexity to even the most basic encounters, though in my (limited) experience it was easy enough to just button-mash past random mobs.

Speaking of which, early screens triggered speculation that the setting to turn off random battles had been removed, but Square Enix recently confirmed that the option is still there, albeit not as a menu toggle.

Etheria: Restart – June 5th (Windows, iOS, Android)

Etheria: Restart is the latest from XD, developer of the Final Fantasy Tactics-esque strategy RPG Sword of Convallaria. This new game is also a free-to-play affair, though it’s more akin to Honkai: Star Rail with its traditional turn-based gameplay and focus on building parties of “heroes” who, of course, are recruited by way of gacha mechanics. Judging by the trailer above and some gameplay I’ve seen, XD has certainly not skimped on production values — a must to even remotely compete with Star Rail and the rest of HoYoverse’s ultra-slick creations. Convallaria pleasantly surprised me with how good it ended up being, so I have high hopes for Etheria: Restart.

Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma – June 5th (Switch 2, Switch, Windows)

As someone who has yet to really gel with a Rune Factory game, I’m deeply intrigued by Guardians of Azuma. Its lush aesthetic and Eastern theming certainly catch my eye, and I’m definitely digging the more involved combat and seemingly deeper story. The big thing for me, though, is the town management system; I’m a total sucker for placing buildings and delegating random tasks to NPCs, and Guardians of Azuma is, to my knowledge, the first game in the series to offer the ability to do that. This is the turning point for me and Rune Factory. I can feel it.

If you’d like thoughts informed by actual experience with the game, check out our hands-on preview from PAX East. We were impressed, to say the least.

Also Coming This Week

The Night of the Rabbit – June 4th (PS5, PS4, XSX, XB1)

Daedalic’s The Night of the Rabbit is coming this week to PlayStation and Xbox. For more, check out our review of this point-and-click adventure game, which is already available on Switch and PC.

Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition – June 5th (Switch 2)

Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the heavy-hitters coming to Switch 2 on day one. Notably, it’s one of only a handful of third-party launch games (Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma is another) that will not have a physical release on a game-key card. Props where it’s due to CD Projekt Red for offering the full game on the cartridge, especially for a sprawling RPG like this.

Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time – June 5th (Switch 2)

Level-5 is putting out a Switch 2 version of cozy action RPG/life sim Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time on launch day. If you have the Switch release, the next-gen upgrade can be had for just $2.59. Side note: I had to tear myself away from this game to write this column.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom – June 5th (Switch 2)

In a layup, Nintendo is releasing “Switch 2 Editions” of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom with sharper visuals, improved performance and a host of additional features. If you’re subscribed to the Switch Online service, you can upgrade the original versions at no additional cost; the upgrade pack for each game’ll run you a tenner otherwise. If you need to buy the full games, it’ll cost $79.99 each, so I’d recommend tracking down Switch copies if you can.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker – June 5th (Switch 2)

GameCube emulation is coming to Switch Online at the Expansion Pass tier, and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is part of the launch selection — yes, the original, not the HD remaster. Which version is better? It depends who you ask.

Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars – June 5th (Switch 2)

Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars is the choice for Switch 2 owners who want classic, turn-based goodness at their fingertips. The first two Suikoden games are regarded highly by myself and many others on the site. Considering the remasters are serviceable at worst, I highly recommend giving them a shot. Just be warned that there is currently no upgrade path for the original Switch version, if you own that.

Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut – June 5th (Switch 2)

SEGA’s contribution to the Switch 2 launch is a director’s cut version of Yakuza 0, the game that was pretty much the Like a Dragon series’ breakout success worldwide. This new release adds 26 minutes of new cutscenes, an online multiplayer raid mode, and support for many other languages. Any version of Yakuza 0 is going to be a great starting point for anyone looking to get into the franchise.

Zenless Zone Zero – June 6th (XSX)

HoYoverse is bringing its free-to-play action RPG Zenless Zone Zero to Xbox Series X|S this week. The game came out on PC, PS5, and mobile devices last July.

Before we close, note that some RPGs getting free Switch 2 upgrades on launch day. Nintendo is rolling out frame rate and visual enhancements for The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, and Pokémon Scarlet & Violet. The two Zelda games are also getting HDR support.

Update June 1st @ 6:45 pm ET: An earlier version of this article mistakenly included the Switch 2 edition of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, but that version is not coming alongside the hardware launch, and does not yet have a release date. We apologize for the error.
