TGS 2026 — Danganronpa 2×2 Hands-On Preview: Murder, They Rewrote

Over the last year and change, Spike Chunsoft has been drip-feeding info on Danganronpa 2×2 (“two by two”), the upcoming remake and reimagining of their 2012 murder mystery visual novel, Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair. Earlier this year, I visited Spike Chunsoft’s new Tokyo headquarters to demo a special chapter of Danganronpa 2×2. This past week at Tokyo Game Show 2026, I sat down across from the game’s director, Takahiro Suzuki, previously the director for Master Detective Archives: Rain Code and one of the planners for past Danganronpa titles. This time, I tried (appropriately) two demos: an “Original Mode” remake of an early-game Class Trial and a scene from the newly remixed story’s “Slayhem Mode.”

Conceptually, the game remains the same: a class of eclectic students is trapped at an island resort, and their only hope of escape is to participate in a death game where they must murder a classmate and successfully cover their tracks.

Danganronpa 2×2: Original Mode

The Original Mode Class Trial is certain to be familiar to fans of the series—a body is discovered, an investigation is made, and a non-stop roundabout debate begins between the surviving characters over how to weed out the killer among them. Clues and accusations flew around the screen, and I had to aim a crosshair and shoot phrases representing gathered evidence at points of contention in others’ dialogue, shown with yellow text.

Things were very heated and frantic, especially as someone mostly unfamiliar with the characters and gameplay of the series, but I did find it compelling and the right level of challenging in terms of detection (though I admittedly struggled to sort character names, having not had hours of visual novel dialogue leading up to that trial).

For this remake, the devs overhauled the visuals, rerecorded the music, and apparently fixed all typos in the dialogue, though the game is otherwise preserved for those who love it.

Danganronpa 2×2: Slayhem Mode

The second “2” in Danganronpa 2×2 takes the form of the newly named Slayhem Mode, a completely different take on the story starting from the beginning, when the murderously monochrome bear, Monokuma, distributes different secret items to the various students. Who kills who, and thus who survives, is shaping up to be very different from what veterans may expect.

Alongside newly composed music from the original’s Masafumi Takada, Slayhem Mode features an all-new character, Sakutaro Higashi, the details around whom remain a mystery. We do know he is voiced in Japanese by Natsuki Hanae (Tanjiro from Demon Slayer and Kaneki from Tokyo Ghoul, among many other leading roles) and in English by Griffin Burns (Colt in Attack on Titan, the titular antihero in Devilman Crybaby, and Cyril in Fire Emblem: Three Houses, to name a few).

I played a chunk of the start of the game in Slayhem Mode. Alongside a totally fresh shuffle of story elements, there are also a handful of new gameplay mechanics, like the Akimbo Consensus in trials. As a newcomer, I found the tone balances the grisly murder investigations very well with the goofy characters, who made me laugh out loud multiple times. Danganronpa winks very knowingly at anime tropes, while not hesitating to take advantage of them—who isn’t compelled by an all-out death game, after all?

After the two demos, director Takahiro Suzuki answered a few questions. Is the original scenario script changed? Not at all, besides fixing typos. Why include Original Mode with Slayhem Mode? They wanted to revisit the setting, but fans of adventure games, RPGs, and visual novels rely on story for enjoyment, so they wanted to provide a fully new story without leaving the original out in the cold.

Doubling the amount of content by paralleling the story is a pretty ambitious way to remake a fan-favourite game, but with so much of the original talent returning, I don’t think anyone will complain about more of a good thing.

The bloody island getaway of Danganronpa 2×2 is set for release on January 14th, 2027 on Switch 1 and 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S (digital only), and PC through Steam and Epic Games Store.
