Final Fantasy is a franchise created by Square Enix, originally released in Japan for the Nintendo Family Computer in 1987, and to North American audiences in 1990. Conceived of by Hironobu Sakaguchi during a downturn for both himself and Square Enix (then Square Co), the series has gone on to become the company’s flagship roleplaying title. Strewn across a wide variety of media, from major motion pictures to collectible card games, it is one of the most well-known properties in video games across the world. It regularly competes with Square Enix’s other main property, Dragon Quest for popularity when a new mainline title hits store shelves.
